In Pac Land, the user takes control of Pac-Man who must rescue the land from the clutches of an evil force threatening the Pac populace with hordes of evil ghosts. The user guides Pac-Man through numerous levels, scrolling from left to right and from right to left in classic scrolling platform fashion.
Pac-Man is able to run and jump through the cities, forests and other areas of Pac Land and is continually assaulted on all sides by an assortment of ghosts, enemies in airplanes, and ground-based barricades and ne'er do wells. Pac-Man has no weapons with which to attack the enemies, save for short bursts after consuming power pills that allow him to kill enemies for a limited time.
The game begins by allowing the user to choose the number of credits (used for continuing once the default number of lives have been used up), and choosing the number of players, which is either one or two.
A point system is in place, and points are earned by completing levels and gathering the classic Pac-Man fruit items such as cherries, bananas and such. At a point total of 10,000, the user is rewarded an additional Pac-Man.
Each level has a time limit for completion that is visually displayed by a number of slowly decaying Pac circles. When all of the Pac circles at the bottom of the screen have eroded away, a life will be lost. Each credit gives the user four lives. ~ Ryan Glover, All Game Guide
