DESCRIPTION

Based on the European comic book series, Les Tuniques Bleus, North & South has you traveling back in time to experience (and sometimes alter the outcome of) the Civil War. Using both Strategy and Arcade modes of play, the game lets you take the side of the Union or the Confederacy. Your objective is to eliminate all the enemy armies by conquering as many territories as you can.

In the Arcade mode you will manually conquer territories and attack enemy forces; your armies consist of Artillery, Cavalry and Infantry. To gain an edge on your opponent, you can fuse two armies together. If you encounter a Fort Sequence, this means that possession of at least two towns connected by a railroad link is vital for both players. Forts protect these towns. To conquer an enemy territory containing a fort, the player must defeat an enemy army present in the territory and also capture a flag located in the fort.

Another action-oriented sequence has you climbing aboard a train, reaching the front of it and disabling the driver with a knife or your fists. In the Strategic mode of play, the computer determines the outcome of each challenge and army battle using a random decision based on the respective strengths of opposing forces.

While waging war, brother against brother (or brother against computer), you will encounter hostile outside forces. Indians will attack from time to time, and occasionally a Mexican will drop a bomb on Texas. Weather conditions are also a factor. If an army gets stuck under a storm cloud, it will be unable to move until the cloud leaves the territory.

You can begin a game of North & South in 1861, 1862, 1863 or 1864. By the time 1865 rolled around, Southern forces were depleted, so that year is not included in the simulation. ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide
