DESCRIPTION
In a world torn by war, players must choose to be either good or evil and find their way through Ninety-Nine Nights of fighting. Utilizing the hardware and technology of the Xbox 360, Ninety-Nine Nights features battles with hundreds of AI on the screen at the same time, each attacking and reacting as an individual. Each character available for play will have their own plotline weaving through the larger story, and each will possess strengths and weaknesses that players must balance to overcome adversaries. There are over 100 weapons and fighting styles to choose from along with an uncountable amount of magic and spells ready for casting. With a story centered on an interracial war and peaceful coexistence, Ninety-Nine Nights is intended to provoke thought and philosophy about war and justice. ~ Gracie Leach, All Game Guide

“A nice wrinkle on the Dynasty Warriors formula. Collecting new items to boost stats and attacks while searching out new battle paths. Multiple characters offer some variety but the later unlockable characters are not as fun to play.”

“It's safe to say pretty much everyone knows the series "Dynasty Warriors" developed by Koei and "Kingdom Under Fire" developed by Phantagram. Those series in their own right set the standard for games in their genre of hack 'n slash mixed with strategic elements. I bought this game because the demo gave me a glimpse of something fresh, new, epic. Surprisingly Ninety-nine nights was developed by the creators of Kingdom Under Fire which confirmed my buying of this game. Once I got the full game that fresh, new, epic feeling left and it showed its true colors of old, shallow, and repetitive.
Looking at the achievements for the game you can already tell how much effort was put into this game. There are about 10 or so achievements each ranging from about 50-200 points each and they're all basically "beat the game". I chose Inphyy to start the game off with. Her level was a simple field with a few buildings in the background. Throughout the game you'll notice that most levels are like this. I can accept this with dynasty warriors as it's based on a book and Koei has a strict "If its not in the book, it's not in the game" policy (trust me, 1000s have tried to persuade them), but this is a stand-alone game on a next generation console!!! There's no excuse for bland level design. Graphically it's average, but even the physics aren't up to par as when some of the characters talk their mouths don't move (a problem we thought solved mid-way through the last generation's lifespan). Lip movement also doesn't match with what people are saying sometimes, but that can be contributed to using lip movement from the asian language because it was released in asia.
Gameplay is very shallow. There are a number of frustrating glitches and oddly placed items. To anyone buying this game I suggest you don't kill anyone near a wall or any other unbreakable physical object or you'll be furious when the enemy finally drops an item you need and you can't get to it because some invisible force is keeping you from getting it...even though its a few feet away. Half the pick-ups are just randomly scattered onto a map. You'll go way out of your way (I'm talking a 10 minute walk with no enemies for miles, through secret passages, hopping fences, destroying walls, etc) to find a lonesome treasure chest hoping to find a new weapon or equipable item only for it to be a health/mp potion which you'll never need because if you keep tapping the X to attack you'll never get hit and even if you do you won't take damage because the game is glitchy between animations. It's as if the developers were deliberately trying to mess with you...either that or lazy.
Your bodyguards (I'd rather call them a personal army since there's like 100 of them) have only 2 commands... charge (attack) or defend (stay around you and attack). Seeing how they gave you an army and they had a few years to think of enhancements to the "third person-hack 'n' slash- real time strategy combination" genre I'd expected more things like different formations. In kingdom under fire: heroes they had 3 formation commands depending on the situation: close for advancing under arrow fire, normal for regular melee vs. melee, and spread for retreating as your soldiers ran faster and weren't blocked by trees. Why the developers of kingdom under fire didn't put it in this game confuses me, especially since the current 360 release of KUF doesn't even resemble the originals. There's really no strategic element at all to using the bodyguards neither are they even useful enough to be in the game. While fighting every once in awhile you'll notice that it seems like your bodyguards aren't attacking at ALL. Sometimes I'd just keep tapping x inorder to watch them and see them swing once every 25+ seconds and get blocked half the time while letting the other army pound away at them. When going and doing levels over again I chose to leave my bodyguards at the beginning of each level and not only did I do better because I could actually see all my enemies, but I got a better score because they weren't all massacred when the AI decides to bring in a mini-boss or 500+ soldiers. Choosing between heavy infantry, infantry, pikemen and archers is a waste as there is no difference between their strength neither do they have unique abilities for use in certain situations neither do they give them situations in which they'd be useful (there's no calvalry to test against the pikemen). Only noticable difference and even more confusing is that archers have way less people in their group for some reason leading them to death quicker. Did the developers not want them to spam arrows and destroy everything in their path like they did in previous games like this?...Oh wait... archers never did behave in that way!
