DESCRIPTION
Players take the roles of valiant warriors, devout clerics, enigmatic wizards, and cunning rogues, to take part in unlimited adventures based on the 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons role-playing rules. Neverwinter Nights was developed by BioWare, the company responsible for the Baldur's Gate series of D&D computer games. As in those games, the action in Neverwinter Nights flows in real-time, but single-player games can be paused while players adjust equipment or set up complex tactical maneuvers. Also like Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights makes every reasonable attempt to stay true to official Dungeons & Dragons rules and — more importantly — to the spirit of the Dungeons & Dragons game. In this regard, Neverwinter Nights also adds a new layer to gameplay, one which is rare in computer RPGs but fundamental to the tabletop games on which the genre is based.
While fantasy role-playing on the computer is nearly as old as video gaming itself, Neverwinter Nights may be the first electronic game to add the elements of creative, loosely scripted storytelling that define the pen-and-paper role-playing experience. As in the many previous computer RPGs based on Dungeons & Dragons rule sets, Neverwinter Nights allows players to create their own hero characters, choosing a from a variety of fantasy races and professions, then play the part of that character to interact with other heroes, villains, and monsters that exist under the same system of rules and statistics. Yet unlike its electronic predecessors, Neverwinter Nights also allows one player to become the Dungeon Master, who can bend and append the rules of the game on the fly, in order to tell the best possible version of the story and allow players to more fully assume the roles of their characters.
No matter how comprehensive and complex its scripting, no single-player computer role-playing game can account for every action a player's character might possibly want to take, or every question he might want to ask. In Neverwinter Nights (as in the pen-and-paper games), the Dungeon Master can adjust the parameters of the adventure's script in the middle of the game, to allow players to try their different, unanticipated solutions to a problem. The Dungeon Master can play the parts of the various non-player characters, to have them answer players' questions directly and in character, instead of with a branching dialogue tree of canned responses. While computers long ago surpassed the statistics management abilities of even the most proficient Dungeon Master, they will never be able to replace human creativity and interaction. By allowing these factors back into the D&D game, Neverwinter Nights offers the means for a multiplayer computer role-playing experience with all the stratagem and personality player characters enjoy in a pen-and-paper D&D session.
Of course, for those times when other gamers are not available to join in, Neverwinter Nights comes with a complete single-player module boasting over 40 hours of play. The game also ships with a working version of the Aurora Toolset, which is the same basic application that BioWare designers used to create the game's official adventure modules. Within weeks of Neverwinter Nights' release, user-created modules for both solo and group gaming became readily available on the Internet. BioWare has also made a number of its own new adventures available, free to owners of the game. While designing a good Neverwinter Nights adventure module still takes all the hard work and creativity as it does in the pen-and-paper version of D&D, obtaining new modules to play is almost as easy as downloading a small file. ~ T.J. “Continued playing Neverwinter Nights once again. Having a much easier time playing as a fighter instead of rogue. Completed the Peninsula District and moving in on the Beggar's Nest.”

“Lovely game, but could use some better sounds/ voices for the spells... and some more wizard-like avatars. So far, moderately tolerable. I had more fun playing an old game of Millipede on Atari 2600...”

“Do you ever get that funny tingerly feeling when a games opening movie finishes? No? Might just be me.
Upon approching Neverwinter Nights I had a bit of a problem. I had found and played a demo of Dungeon Siege first. While today the graphics were nothing to shout about but back then, full 3D RPG's were rare. The music and the setting of Dungeon Siege grabbed hold of me and smotherd me in its grahpical lovelyness. Then I found NWN and the graphics compared to DS put me off a bit. Oh, but oh I'm glad I stuck with it.
you see, the relentless bashing of monsters got tedious after a while. While there was a good story lurking behind the hordes of creatures all lusting after your fragile body I got bored.
NWN had an epic, spanning story with quests that could if you wanted not involve fighting. It harked back to the days of my first RPG Icewind Dale. And despite the grahpics (in my own opinion) being inferior to DS I fell in love with NWN Story based RPG's, I found were what I liked and NWN delivers the goods.
As with most RPG you create your hero. No party creation this time round, its mostly solo play except a few hired companions. Male, Female, wizard, warrior whatever you choose it dosn'ty make any diffirence to how people treat you, just how you fight and sometimes helps with a quest if you know your stuff in your chosen class. You have been recruited by a saucy elf named Arebeth to help cure a plauge called The Wailing Death that has swept throughout the city, killing hundreds and turning the local populace into miserable bastards. As with any epic RPG the whole thing goes tits up and your packed off to the city. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I love atmosphere in games and the feeling of a city drawn to its limits is recreated very well. Not only the city but all those fun RPG locations. Caves, crypts, woods and NPC houses with pretty music to boot. You know what you have to do. Level up and fight bad guys (unless you want to be a total dick) and save the world from a threat greater than anyone can guess. If your familer with the rules surrounding Forgotten Realms RPG than you'll be ok. If not, the game will help you during the character creation process so you can't really go wrong. After a few playthrough's you'll get the hang of it and can level up how you see fit.
Apart from the main quest (which is bloomin' long and very, very satisfying) is numerous side quests all waiting to grant you those valuble XP. These mostly range to killing things but hey, you do get to rescue a few people! the UI is a dream to use as well, and one of the best I've come across. With three sets of quickbars, the ability to add notes to your journey to dropping map pins, the game really does help you along as much as it can. You can even choose to hide the UI of you like. Oh and check out the radial menu system. Very cool.
As for much else I can't really say as I don't want to spoil the delights that NWN hides. It's a first class game, worthy of the awards it won. And while in todays world of flashy graphics engines and zero story games it dosn't hurt to return to NWN world. I certainly to and in fact I think I here it calling my name right now.
