In Mouse Trap, you must guide a cheese-eating mouse (actually a mouse head) through a maze. In each maze, there are a few bones scattered about. Eat a bone, and with the mere push of a button, you can temporarily turn into a dog. You can use up your bones as soon as you get them or stockpile them for later levels. As a mere mouse, you are vulnerable to cats, which roam throughout the maze. When you are a dog, you can bite the cats, removing them from the screen. From time to time a hawk will zig-zag across the screen. Avoid this wicked bird or it will kill you on contact.
Among the walls of the maze, there 13 are color-coded doors. You can open these red, yellow, and blue doors by pushing the corresponding buttons on the control panel. You should open and close these doors to maneuver around the maze, block cats from you path, and gain access to closed off areas. In the center of the maze, there is a box marked IN. If you go in this box, you randomly warp to one of the four corners of the maze. Once you have eaten all of the cheese on the screen, you continue to the next level, which is basically the same, but more difficult. ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide
