In the first Mortal Kombat, Shang Tsung was banished from the Outworld to Earth for his crimes. To redeem himself, he was to unbalance the furies of our world, allowing Outworld ruler Shao Kahn to enter the dominion and rule forever. Unfortunately for Shang, he was defeated.
Returning to Outworld a failure, Shang Tsung avoided execution by coming up with a scheme that suited Shao Kahn's bloodthirsty sensibilities. He found a way to lure Earth's Kombat Warriors to the bizarre Outworld, where they would be forced to enter a tournament hosted by Kahn.
The tournament is a series of bloody one-on-one fights to the death. Fights are timed and if you win the best two out of three, you get a chance to taunt or destroy your opponent with one of an assortment of finishing moves (such as friendships and babalities).
All twelve fighters from the arcade version of Mortal Kombat are featured in this game.Johnny Cage, Reptile, Sub Zero, Kitana and the others can punch (low and high), kick (low and high), block, crouch, and flip (forward and back). They can also perform a number of combos, advanced moves (such as uppercuts, foot sweeps and roundhouses), and character-specific special moves such as throwing fireballs, teleporting, shooting green flames and firing lightning bolts.
When you get ready to play Mortal Kombat II, pressing start will put you in a one-player battle for the title of Grand Champion. You must work your way up through all the Kombatants and eventually face Shang Tsung, who has physical and magical skills, Kintaro, a half-human dragon, and ultimately Shao Kahn himself. A second player can join in the tournament at any time. ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide
