DESCRIPTION
The first-ever high-def first-person platform game, Mirror's Edge is an edgy, action-driven adventure starring Faith, a skyscraper daredevil whose specialty is flips, twists, and tumbles through a 3D obstacle course of rooftops, ledges, and wires. To say that Faith takes parkour to new heights would be an understatement. It's her job to be fast and elusive, and acrobatic escapes through the highest of futuristic high-rises are all in a day's work for her.
Then again, sometimes it is better to take an opponent by surprise — disarm him, or worse, with a quick kick or flurry of punches, before making an easy escape. The game is designed to pose Faith with multiple solutions to her puzzles and predicaments, and multiple paths to a quick demise as well. A key dynamic in this stream-of-motion play style is the "flow," which gives the player visual indications of possible routes, from rooftop to rooftop and beyond. Players devise on-the-spot strategies, to evade or attack enemies and to reach for goals that can change, literally, with every leap of Faith.
Faith works as a Runner — a sort of secret, rogue courier. The city is controlled by an all-knowing government that truly wants to know all, and so the ability for one person to get a private package through to another person without the authorities taking a peek inside is highly valuable. It is also highly dangerous, involving death-defying routes to run, and the constant threat of being discovered and chased down. When her sister is framed for an assassination, however, the city becomes a lot more dangerous for Faith. No longer is she running for the job — she is running for her life. ~ T.J. “A First Person Platformer that could've created that genre if it was better. It had an unique storyline but multiplayer would have been better if IT actually HAD players in the same game as you...instead of just trying to top the leaderboards”

“Players assume the role of daredevil package courier Faith in a sterilized, dystopian future where a Big Brother government has taken control and done some really bad things like ???, ??? and forcing way too many overtime hours on city cleaning personnel ( them windows be gleaming! ). When Faith's sister is framed for an assassination, Faith suddenly finds herself suddenly locked in mortal combat against the evil(?) government, relying on all her parkour skills and wiles to... run away... a lot.
Unfortunately, Faith's parkour wiles are as weak as the plot, and players often must suffer through agonizing, flow breaking stops in action ( sometimes while being shot at ), trying to find the correct colour coded handhold in order to stay on the right path in a surprisingly linear game, despite DICE's best efforts to streamline the game's action and give the impression of having multiple choices. For many players, DICE's bewildering decision to not open up the city rooftops as an open world experience will be especially disheartening.
Luckily, challenging optional time trials do a much better job at scratching that parkour itch.
Verdict: EA and Faith's faith is unfortunately misplaced as nonexistent plot, fundamental design flaws and lack of open world crush Mirror's Edge's ambitions and potential. However, difficult time trials do offer a satisfying outlet for all player parkour urges. Hopefully a sequel can bring justice ( and an open world approach ) to an excellent idea, though with so many excellent games already incorporating parkour gameplay elements ( albeit not in first person ), Faith has a difficult battle ahead of her.
Purchased: USD40 @ Toys 'r' Us ( B2G1 sale ).
Value: USD19.

“Not sure why I feel the need to review this game after so long, but seeing it in my profile games just kinda sparked something, so here goes...
When I first heard about Mirror's Edge, I was very skeptical (a first person shooter that's focused on...running away? Bwah?), but when I saw the first shots of it and when I saw some of the early gameplay trailers, I became very intrigued. The gameplay itself looked pretty cool, with the protagonist performing high flying escapes, running around on rooftops, etc., all in an effort to capture the spirit of the somewhat underground sport known as Freerunning.
Finally, when I the teasers of some of the story, I was hooked; I knew I would be trying this game out, so into my Gamefly queue it went. I got it. I played it. I was very underwhelmed.
It's hard to say why, exactly; everything was pretty much as depicted in the gameplay trailers...but that's just it. What you saw in the trailers was pretty much it, there was nothing else. Basically it became very repetitive, and the one thing that should've been it's saving grace (the story) just came off very stilted and uninspired (which is sad, because the whole "fighting the man, overcoming the evil corrupt government" thing should be plotline gold, but sadly, the animation did little to sell it. It alternated between being beautiful and awesome to very sloppy and poorly executed).
All in all, a game with a lot of potential, but sadly fell short. I will say this though, it has one of the coolest music themes ever ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TERyxFfMqDk&feature=related )”

“Although over all these years many first class ego shooters captivated us in front of our consoles, their gameplay didn’t change that much since the beginnings. This is why developer DICE changed the perception of a first person game experience.
The first minutes of the game already show that Mirror’s Edge definitely tries new paths. Even though setting and story are very film noir, the game itself features a very reduced and aseptic approach, covering artsy two-dimensional cartoon-like cutscenes paired with the very minimal yet sterile and clinical audiovisual realization in fancy and overly shrill color scheme – very untypical for a postmodern yet distopian environment, but absolutely brilliant in conjunction.
The gameplay is a matter of opinion as it is as simple that it mostly involves repeated tapping of the L1-button at the righ time. Major flaws however are the roughly drawn characters and the lack of the story’s depth and narrative finesse. The main protagonist Faith is as undercooled as the frozen metropolis itself. As she only shows herself in a couple of cutscenes, she seems too distant and strangely unseizable – another scheme in a CCTV surveilled world. Unfortunately – even though it fits the context – this dramaturgical knack turns out to be wrong as it adds no further layer to enhance the story and make it more epic.
Flowing through the levels, jumping over dizzying high skyscraper roofs, crouching through dark sewers or riding on a subway train is quite stylish and fun to play, but only for the five hours which it takes you to rush through the story mode. The only reason replaying the title is to get all the achievements/trophies or to own in the racing-like time trial mode, a real multiplayer part is missing. Nevertheless, under the glossy surface there’s not that much of potential. Get it at your local video rental shop, have fun for a couple of hours and chuck it out.
