For years Japan was ruled by the magical Lord of Darkness. His minions kept the population in constant dread, killing anyone who dare oppose their Lord. One fateful day Shogun Tokugawa had a vision. In this vision he saw a small group of warriors destroy the Lord and restore happiness and tranquility to Japan. Inspired by the vision, Tokugawa recruited five courageous fighters, trained them, and sent them to destroy the Lord of Darkness.
Mercenary Force has four mercenaries at your disposal. If all of them get killed (by losing their hit points), the game is over. Luckily, you can buy a mercenary (with Yen you will find along the way) at the beginning of each round. You can also buy medicine, sushi, and tea, each of which will restore hit points to your characters. As you progress through the six rounds of play, you will face a number of enemies including a sky dragon, a giant centipede, a giant toad, and a genie. The action takes place around Japanese graveyards, cafes, temples, etc.
There are five warrior types. Each of your mercenaries will fit one of these descriptions: The servant uses a single-shot rifle; the mystic shoots vertically; the monk shoots diagonally; the ninja has a short-range shuriken; and the samurai brandishes a double cross-bow. There are four different fighting formations your mercenary force can use: wide, very wide, narrow, and box. In each formation, the leader of the force can become a Spirit Warrior for a short time. ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide
