“If you really hate the lore (aka don't like the ready parts) you may end up hating this game. The real strength of Mass Effect is in the conversation system. No game has ever done dialogue quite the same way before, nor has a game used that dialogue to shape the quest structure. For one, you don't actually pick what Shepard specifically says to people. Instead you pick the tone of the conversation (now that I think about it, Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit did some similar to this). In most games, you go to a NPC and he's all "I has a quest for you!" and you either "Accept" or "Decline". In Mass Effect, any NPC may have a quest but you might have to say the right things and ask the right questions to get them to offer it up. Sort of how IRL people don't always say what's on their mind immediately, even if you directly ask. Hopefully, it get's better for you, as Mass Effect, in my opinion, has excellent pacing, some of the best in gaming. And remember, whatever choices you make will follow you into the sequel...”
