The first game of the series to use the Sierra point-and-click interface in lieu of the parser-driven method, Leisure Suit Larry 5: Passionate Patti Does a Little Undercover Work again has you controlling both Larry and Patti, each with separate storylines. The points-for-task are scaled back to a mere 1,000, with roughly a quarter of them assigned to Patti.

In keeping with the series history, the fifth chapter (actually fourth, since "Leisure Suit Larry 4" was mysteriously skipped in the annals of publishing) centers on "parental control" material, aka, lewd and lascivious innuendo and adult behavior (if one can mistake Larry's behavior as adult!). Larry works for the PornProdOffice in Los Angeles and is given an assignment to videotape his experiences with three finalists in the Sexiest Woman in America contest (the producer figures that if the women will bed Larry, the "dorkiest" man alive, they must be sexy!). To accomplish his task, Larry travels to Atlantic City, Miami and New York City.

Meanwhile, Patti, miffed at being stiffed by her piano bar club manager, accepts an undercover assignment for the FBI to discover who's behind the corruption in the entertainment industry. Patti's journeys take her to Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and Baltimore, with the adventure neatly tied up at an awards dinner at the White House.
