Laser Squad Nemesis is a squad-based strategy game played over e-mail and developed by the team responsible for the original X-Com. The title is free, but only registered users may initiate games. Players who have not purchased a subscription are restricted to one race, three maps, and three free matches, after which they must be challenged by subscribers in order to play. Set against the backdrop of a dystopian future, players assume control of one of three races, the so-called Laser Marines, Spawn, or Machina (a fourth race, the Greys, is planned for future release). After selecting a squad of units, the team is deployed on the battlefield and commands are issued by turns. Once both players have completed a turn, the results are calculated by the LSN server and returned to each player as an email attachment. The outcome of each turn is then displayed via a short real-time battle sequence in which players can watch their squad engage the enemy.
The 3D environments are fully destructible, allowing players to destroy trees, lampposts, doors, and walls. The extrapolated outcome of commands can be scrutinized via the 'Test Orders' function, however, these test cases do not take into account outside factors such as enemy movement, and thus offer only basic strategic guidance. A replay function, however, provides players with the ability to review previous turns. Prior to battle, players are granted an initial allotment of points with which to purchase units; each of which possesses varying characteristics and inherent advantages and drawbacks. The Marines and Machina have a total of five units each, while the Spawn are capable of producing six units. At present the title offers two gameplay modes: HQ and Wipeout. Wipeout requires players to decimate every opposing unit on the map, while HQ asks players to destroy their opponent's Headquarters. ~ Gavin Frankle, All Game Guide
