DESCRIPTION
Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories is a PlayStation 2 remake of the 2004 Game Boy Advance game, and follows the story of Sora, Riku, and their Square and Disney character companions, in the time between the events of the PS2's original Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. As in the GBA original, the play of the game is driven by memory-empowered cards that the characters collect in their travels. The various cards can be used to perform special moves in combat or to create rooms containing treasure, enemies, or save points. Display of card information is more detailed and accessible in the PS2 version of the game, and managing a deck of cards is easier with a Dual Shock 2 controller. Released well past the console's prime, the game makes use of many well-honed graphical and presentational techniques to enliven the Chain of Memories story from a fresh perspective. Characters are voiced by the actors who performed them in the original PS2 game and its sequel, including Haley Joel Osment as Sora and David Gallagher as Riku. ~ T.J. Deci, All Game Guide

“Re: Chain of Memories serves as a midquel between the 2 numbered installments of the Kingdom Hearts series, and while it's required gameplay for the series (that is, if you want to avoid a lot of confusion when playing 2), it leaves much to be desired. Being a port of a gameboy advance game, the title is leagues above the original. However, the worlds are all filler repeats of the first KH title (justifiably, seeing as the game is based on memories), the only world to have voiced cutscenes is the hub world (as noted, this is a port from the GBA, so even that small amount of voice work is an improvement), and the gameplay is card based which adds a certain level of annoyance to combat.
The stories ability to explain away the games few short comings redeems the title.”

“Kingdom Hearts is back and better than ever on the PS2 with Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories. It combines some of the story of the first game with an all new story and a brand new card-based battle system. Not to mention that once you beat the story as Sora, you get to play through a different story as his best friend Riku. How awesome is that? Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories is an amazing game. My only complaint is that the card system is a bit strange. You use cards to attack, open doors, use magic, go into worlds, and you even need them to get help from Donald and Goofy! WTF is up with that? Overall, Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories is a great game. Not as great as the original or the sequel, but still great. It gets a 4 out of 5. ”

“YAY, Ed and I finally beat Chain of Memories! The ending seemed a little abrupt, but it makes sense in terms of chronology. Also, I teared up twice during the ending bits. Once at the big reveal,...”

“Ed and I slogged through a few more hours of this. The battle system is still driving me insane, and it usually takes a couple tries to go through a boss, but I'm really glad we're playing it. ...”

“It's pretty cool, mostly I'm playing it just to see what the story was, I like it better than the GBA version, but not as well as the other two on the PS2.”
