Java Jimis a 2D action title with some adventure elements. An ominous being named Onesh has sent Java Jim to another realm to complete a dangerous mission. To help the hero on his way, he shares four proverbs. These proverbs explain important strategies in the game.
There are nine different phases from which to choose. These phases are represented in a three by three grid. In order to select the phase of choice, you'll have to jump around this grid and wait until a moving blue box lands on your chosen square. When this happens, you're warped into the level.
Levels consist of a series of grids with various icons and pictures on them. Most levels are set in deserts, with palm trees and volcanoes strewn about. Whenever Jim hops on a square, it opens up and the contents within are moved from the ground to the surface. Contents can include various astrological signs, axes, and keys.
Java Jim isn't immortal. When he receives too much damage from volcano blasts, various beasts, or moving bullets, he loses an autochthon (or a life) and is warped out of the level. He'll then have to start the level again. In addition to losing lives, when enemies touch a square that has been overturned, they'll fill in the hole. This means you'll have to hop over to that square again to dig it out.
When all the squares have been overturned, the level is complete. At the end of Java Jim, you'll be informed on the number of items you collected and how well you did. ~ Matthew House, All Game Guide
