DESCRIPTION
Canadian developer BioWare's first role-playing game after Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is set in a mythic version of ancient China, at a time when a parallel world of darkness and chaos threatens to cross over into the realm of the living. Players initially choose from a selection of predefined characters, each with a name, background, and distinct skill set. They will then be able to gradually shape their character's fighting style from over 30 different types, from martial arts to weapons-based combat to even magic. Combat is performed in real-time from a third-person perspective, with players able to pause the game to execute specific commands during the fighting sequences.
Body, mind, and spirit are the three primary attributes inherent in each character, and over time mastery over these guiding forces allows players to transform into a terra-cotta warrior, fox, or ghoul, respectively. No matter which character is selected at the onset, players will be able to hold court in a base of operations called the stronghold, where they can practice specific techniques, store acquired relics or mementos, and even build a flying ship in the shape of a dragonfly. Though the game follows the path of one character instead of a party, players can earn "followers" to their cause who will remain at the stronghold to be assigned tasks that will help influence the story. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide

“I've had this game for a couple years now. Bought it from a friend on RvB along with PDZ, but never got around to playing it (at the time I wanted to finish KOTOR II first, but that's obviously not...”

“This game certainly shows the markings of where Mass Effect and other BioWare RPG's came from. The gameplay mechanic in this game is fairly solid and after one realizes that this is not a brawler the pertinence needed for battle becomes more apparent. That is not to say though the battle system is deep, in fact far from it. I found myself utilizing 2-3 basic moves and attacks the entire game.
I was also very disappointed by the scope of the game. The game takes place in a very linear fashion through several "dungeons", but the grander concept of the world is completely lost. You have no idea of scope and in fact you only visit a couple of towns in the entire game.
It is worth the play through if you want to do it quick, but it is not the grand masterpiece that some of Bioware's other products. ”

“Made some substantial progress in the game today and I am getting the hang of the battle system finally. It definitely is growing on me, but there are still frustrating moments in battle. ”

“Slightly frustrating game as you never have a good idea of how much health you have and how much you are losing. ”

“Overratedness strikes again!
I'm not going to sit here and rant on the overhyped, overrated game this is (mainly because I picked it up years after release). Jade Empire is a wonderful game on some merits yet its held back by a repetitive combat system and its inability to reach its full potential.
In Jade Empire you start off in a school of martial arts as an orphan being raised by the master of the school. Through a series of events the school is destroyed, pretty much everyone killed and your master being captured (after showing some unholy strength earlier by destroying an entire ship in one blow *facepalm*). So you go on a journey to save him while at the same time learning about yourself and becoming the "savior of the world" while at the sametime discovering your hidden potential (cliche after cliche after cliche...). There are a few fighting styles to choose from at the beginning, but I'm skipping the character creation part..well because after a few hours into the game you realise that you're going to eventually learn EVERY single fighting style in the game anyway. For those that don't know the best fighting style is 'legendary strike'. Its a fighting style composed of a couple (and I do mean a couple) famous moves you've seen any pretty much every kung-fu flick, such as the flying kick. Also, I have to say, in its description it basically hints at there being some sort of move that noone has ever seen, but when they do the fight is usually over with that one blow which means there should be some sort of instant death move, but there isn't...
Anyways onto gameplay. This is your standard fare of hack-n-slash. It's a little more refined than Fable's combat system, but there's really nothing that sets it apart. You block, you dodge, you attack. That's it. There's not even any jumping off of walls. There could have been so much done with this system, but they squandered its potential and went for the basics.
The soundtrack is what makes this game. Its an fantastic sort of asian elements including classic songs you're always glad to hear in anything where martial arts is involved. Everything sets up situations perfectly and draws out every last emotion in every scene. Whoever was the composer is definitely going to be in the business for a long time.
The story is cliche with a few twists. If I was 100% sure I'd say this was more of a rip-off of KOTOR along with all the romances and such. I have to admit though that you feel good in the end after all the work you put in. Its satisfying and doesn't really leave you wanting for more. Although I'm sure people (myself included) will go back just to do the big gay romance and see what happens in the end. So I guess there's a little replayablility after all.
Well I'm tired of typing. Jade Empire is 3/5 stars at best. Back when I played I found myself listing all the things I would've done with the game that would've made it infinitely better and problably have people talking about it for years to come. Even with its low rating its worth the rent though.”

“A great storyline, if too short, with little replay value (though the characterization could be revisited twice or three times easily). The gameplay was fun, but too short and at times the story was overly predictable. ”

“An action RPG and original IP from Bioware. Unfortunately, the combat is too easy and there isn't any good equipment to find. The saving grace is the storyline and fascinating world crafted by Bioware (inspired by Oriental mythology).”
