The first retail release from Massachusetts-based Magic Hat Software, Irth Online is a massively multiplayer role-playing game set in a traditional fantasy world. In line with the developer's mission statement, Irth Online was consciously designed to avoid artificial limitations on playing style, so it would encourage gamers to experience the persistent world according to their own goals and role-played personalities. The game world is home to four distinct factions. Three are motivated by aggression and conquest, and offer player-versus-player combat, while the fourth values peace above all else, and allows only player-versus-environment play. Because these factions exist in the same game world, players of different motivations and preferences can interact, without infringing on one another's fun. The game also promotes personal playing styles with its open skill development system, which does not tie characters to a particular set of class-specific abilities, and by providing every player with an in-game house that can be built up and customized. ~ T.J.
