Sega and Sammy's Iron Phoenix transports gamers to a realm of fantasy, where they'll do deadly battle against strange foes with powerful, magical weapons. Though fighting is definitely its focus, Iron Phoenix is more of an "arena combat" game, similar to Onimusha Blade Warriors or Saffire's Barbarian, as opposed to a more traditional brawler such as Virtua Fighter or Tekken. In addition to one-on-one "versus" battles, the game supports deathmatches and other group combat, for as many as 16 online players.

Iron Phoenix was designed from the start to offer solid support for online multiplayer gaming through the Xbox Live service, but it also features a full single-player campaign. Here, players take the role of a young warrior destined to reunite a warring world. Long ago, a mystical meteor feel from the sky, and an enterprising blacksmith crafted nine weapons from its ore. These weapons grant great power to those who wield them, and by possessing all nine, a warrior becomes invincible.
