DESCRIPTION
Nintendo DS proprietors are invited to check into the Hotel Dusk, an old-fashioned mansion where guests are either unwilling or unable to leave. Former policeman Kyle Hyde travels to 1979 Los Angeles to locate a friend who was last seen in room 215, a room cryptically described as "where wishes are granted." What follows is a graphic adventure that involves hunting for clues and solving an assortment of puzzles to determine the whereabouts of Hyde's friend. The game is played with the handheld positioned like a book, with the left screen depicting 3D views of the environment and the right screen displaying an overhead perspective used to move around. Dialogue sequences and cut-scenes feature stylistic, black-and-white graphics to evoke a noirish atmosphere. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide

“Story: Hotel Dusk is an interesting game, to say the least. The story follows Kyle Hyde, a down-on-his-luck ex-cop with a dark past and a cheap suit whose only real goal in life is to find his ex-partner who he shot and left for dead. On his journey, he winds up at Hotel Dusk, a rundown dump of a hotel that holds more than its fair share of secrets. Throughout the 9 - 10 hour story, Kyle Hyde must figure out the secrets of the hotel and its guests before the sun rises the next morning. All in all, the story is well executed and manages to stay fresh, even if some of the plots points and incidents seem just a little too coincidental.
Gameplay: The gameplay of Hotel Dusk is simple and follows many of the mainstays of past point and click adventure games. You walk around, engage in conversations, find items and use said items on things in the environment in order to progress the story. Occasionally, when using an item, you will do short and simple minigames using the stylus and touch screen to perform certain tasks. At the end of chapters, you then take simple quizzes that remind you of what happened during that chapter. Other than that, there is very little deviation.
Style: The art style deserves special mention due to the originality and beauty of the hand-drawn and animated sprites. They look FANTASTIC. The music also really shines with both upbeat and warm tracks as well as tracks that are somber and mysterious that really help set the mood. The 3D visuals, which are used on the normal viewing screen while walking around, however lack the charm and character of the hand-drawn sprites, which is disappointing.
Verdict: If you like point-and-click adventure games and interactive novels, you will LOVE this game. The stunning sprites and writing will have you caring about what happens to the characters in the end.”

“Still arguably one of the best games on DS.
Both point and click adventure style, puzzle solving and story driven mystery drama, this game boasts with really unique style, good graphics for this handheld, and was one of first games to really utilize the gains of playing the DS sideways.
The game uses every unique feature of DS in various ways to solve puzzles, it EVEN exploits the LCD technology and you need a honest to god black light to solve one puzzle (or tilt your DS sideways until colors skew a little)
The game offers really nice, mystery shrouded story that player is really intrigued to drive on, and is fitting to new and old gamers alike.”
