Heroes of Might and Magic II Gold is a re-issue of the original game, the expansion and an additional 25 bonus maps. As such, the buyer receives both Heroes of Might and Magic II and Heroes of Might and Magic II: The Price of Loyalty with identical gameplay. For those who have only played the original Heroes of Might and Magic, all of the add-ons, enhancements and improvements that came with the sequel are contained within this re-release.
As a collection, the game has over 100 maps and scenarios with both standard and campaign modes available. Support for up to six people via hot-seat, network or Internet connection is offered for those interested in multi-player action. The turn-based function allows each player to essentially operate at his or her own pace.
The story remains the same with the player having the option to command either the evil prince or take on the crusade of the rightful heir to the throne. The kingdom is faced with a titanic struggle between the forces of the two brothers as they challenge each other (and you) to seize total control of Lord Ironfist's realm, land and throne.
Heroes of Might and Magic II Gold contains the full manual in electronic form and offers the user a version of Adobe Acrobat for use in displaying it on-screen. Using Adobe Acrobat, the manual runs to a hefty 131 pages — a formidable number for those desiring a printed copy. The game also ships with a fold out glossy compendium that depicts the six different castle kingdoms (knight, sorceress, wizard, barbarian, necromancer and warlock) and the various beings associated with each as well as the nine assigned attribute ratings. ~ Michael L.
