Well minus the temper tantrums (well kind of)--any time I have had twenty something guests over I have had similar issues.

Yep issues in the list from one to ten, are all stuff I have seen (way too often) from people in their twenty somethings.

Though number seven tends to be a form of foreplay when the people are past twenty compared to when they are ten.

I am going say that you likely are just a little bit more responsible that these children is all--as trust me, large groups of twenty somethings will do a fair amount of the same stuff.

Especially the ones that try to say they like video games--but typically are only ever seen to want to play one or two, out of a huge ass collection.

Suggesting to play any others is usually met with looking at Megaman X Collection or Fallout 3 (well any game really) and saying, "this looks like Final Fantasy--I do not want to play this! Final Fantasy sucks!"

Which typically has me tilt my head, lift and eye brow, and tell them that yes, Final Fantasy sucks--and perhaps if they were as huge of a video game fan as they say they are--they would not be calling Megaman X or Fallout 3 a Final Fantasy looking game.

Moral of the Story: some of these kids will stay ten years old, well into their twenties and maybe their thirties.”

I've already noted the ones whom still seem like babies even though they're supposed to be 10 or even 12 and can tell this will possibly continue throughout adulthood and may lead to a rough highschool experience lol. And try talking to some kids who've never even heard of or played Final Fantasy among other household titles!!! It's like and you seriously proclaim yourself to be some sort of HUGE gamer? They deserve a slap just for that.

I also feel for you when you say one or two out of a huge ass collection. Most of the time I'm forced to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 out of the what? 40+ combined xbox 360 & original xbox games I have.

For some of the things such as my battery pack I've told their parents that the kids owe me such and such amount for a replacement and the parents while irritated, agreed to help the kids pay me off. So I'm guessing the kids will be doing slave labor inorder to get money from their parents :)

Or atleast some other punishment that would teach these kids some restraint and respect for other people's items. All in all this is family or alteast kind of family in some cases so I'm not expecting to get paid, but if that happens I can almost guarantee several beatdowns and a change from faux democracy to a nice, cruel, heartless dictatorship next time they're over.

You will typically find anybody who has a decent amount of knowledge on the subject will generally down play it a lot more. Getting responses from "I have played a few games" to "What makes you think I play video games--pfft!" from most of the biggest sources of information on the subject.

Though responses of "I am not a gamer" typically do not indicate anything really.

As well--I am pretty certain @EarthboundX would probably say "I am not a gamer" if approached about it.

Lol Some of these kid's game libraries mostly consist of terrible movie based games, those sports games with former big game protagonists like sonic, nights, etc. and things people would never think of spending money on like "TNA! Wrestling". I don't think of any those games will have any affect :(

Actually after listening to several of them say how "so and so movie based game is great" and then trying to persuade me to buy it so many times (even though I know for a fact that the game is horrible after only seeing previews for it)... I think they'll love the hell out of King Kong.”

I had to write a paper on it in college. Then again, I am not aware of any changes made to such legislation since then. But it was a topic of debate during the whole Napster debacle and the ongoing piracy epidemic that has been going on since. @bonemane - Your story reminds me why I miss cartridges. They were so @#$% durable! Every game disc should come with a protective coating on them for scratch resistance. I don't let anyone under the age of 12 touch my game systems,and even then it is a case by case basis with extreme supervision for the first hour or so. Where various ROM and ISO websites gave the defense that they merely provided the services to allow people to have back ups of their games. Stating that it was legal to have the games if you did not own them, provided you delete them within 24 hours of download.

The judges ruled on the side of the companies attacking these websites for providing a backup for people who would have issues producing ones on their own (as well, it IS hard to backup UMD, Cartridge and Cart based games, Wii Discs, Gamecube Discs and Blurays).

The case ruled that the game companies provide enough decent service, that a back up is completely unnecessary, and thus not an admissible defense.

So, yeah, as of about 2006 and 2007, backups are no longer a legal reason to have more than one copy of your game.”

“That sucks if we can't make backup of the games we own since they get scratched up WAAAAAAAY too easy nowadays. I remember those old black ps1 disks could take a beating and still work flawlessly.

I started noticing the disks started getting fragile once the ps2 came out. The disk to my interact *ugh* memory card slipped off my coffee table and shattered into pieces and its was only like two feet high. Also, I kept dozens of ps2 demo discs and games in a giant cd booklet I had and never touched them for years only to find them all scratched up after taking them out a little bit ago.

It was real surprising since some of those games I've only played for like an hour and put them away and others such as demos disks I had multiple copies of so I NEVER played them and still they scratched almost to the point of no return =/

I swear at times it seems that, just like glass, disks nowadays get scratched/crack in the cold too. In the winter is when I see alot of scratches developing even though I'm not playing the games and I know noone else is.”

“@bettadud Think about it, you have a bunch of CDs in even closer proximity to each other than normal grinding against each other constantly every time the container is moved. As long as you don't move the thing or place anything on it. Cases are much safer for discs. Not as efficient in terms of space though.”

Yeah I found that out the hard way. Plus some cd folders aren't smoothed out and instead have some kind of texture on the part that holds your cds (sometimes bumpy) that'll scratch up your cds if moved around.

Yeah I just threw out about 30 or so broken hard jewel cases myself. They might have less chances of scratching up your cds, but unless you store them properly or buy some heavy duty ones you're just going to end up with cracked cases and plastic bits everywhere.

With hard cases I'd go with the same ones as the 360 and old ps2 cases. They're heavy duty and will last long, but after awhile they look so tired and worn.”

The ignorance of some people amazes me at times. I actually had some guy over at my house scoff at me and say "noone plays video games and you shouldn't because you're grown" when I said that I play video games.

My response, "Look around, alot more people, especially adults, play video games than you think" and I didn't say anything else cause he actually did look around and saw that there were like 20 people in my house playing video games at the time (including his own brothers) and he was the only one left out. The expression on his face as he shut his mouth and retreated to his corner was enough for me.

I also find it funny that video games cause so much controversy with adult topics yet people still refer to them as something for kids. "No Russian" from MW2 anyone? How about some "hot coffee"? Or better yet just watch me play through Manhunt.”

Well, what I was mostly touching on--was well... a large amount of people tend to down play what a medium is capable of for literary abilities when they say it is only for kids.

Look at Graphic Novels. Many of them can handle some rather mature concepts. However, most people refuse to think of comics as a medium capable of showing anything other than stories at the level of Family Circus.

Video games have much the same issues of just merely being downplayed so much.

The only sad thing is: Movie ratings parents latched onto from the start as "need to know" information. Those same parents tend to be completely oblivious to the fact that there is a rating system for video games.

I dunno, if these parents are ones to ignore the "Explicit Lyrics" sticker on CDs/Albums.

Well, that is the thing: you do still get games that are wonderful for kids to play.

The secret is mostly to do what Walt Disney did when he made movies.

That whole "ironic quote" of "There is no money to be made in making children's cartoons" is quite correct actually.

Walter's secret was to make something Adults could enjoy, but allow it to be something he could show to kids.

It is just very sad that this manner of making cartoons got lost for a few decades, only to briefly return in the 1990s... then bugger off again completely.

I dunno, there are still plenty of "All Ages Games"--to put it a bit better. Then we do get a few games that tend to try to pump out how mature they are--only to make it look like something created in the boy's locker room of an elementary school (and typically about as anatomically correct as some of that stuff too).

I dunno--I guess the main issue with making stuff for kids is well, the focus issues.

“Both my girls have a DS, and play on "my" systems and I've never had a problem. They know how much a game costs (because they've had to save up to buy one). If they do start getting careless (which means they left a DS out of its case when not in use), then it becomes "mine" for a day =D”

Uh--I do not know how you made the connection there.

Saying you are not a gamer does not indicate how much somebody plays video games in any way.

This in the context of people claiming to be experts being a typical indication of lack of knowledge--and most experts generally being the sort to down play it... or at least not mention it, or do a badge thing.

Yes, in other geekdoms you have people who say they are experts who actually are experts. Comic book geeks typically know their craft. Dungeons and Dragons geeks who say they are experts... tend to know their craft. Movie buffs--that is a hard one.

This kind of puts Video Games on the same level of Musics for the ability to be an "expert" in them. Most people who know music well, are going to be the first to profess ignorance of it. With the people who are experts in music being... well... uh... this is hard not to do a cheap shot at Hot Topic, Coldplay or Dashboard Confessionals here--while making a witfully unaware reference to the Beatles indicating complete ignorance.

This sort of "I am an expert at X" vs. "I really do not know X" vs. "I am not an X addict" dynamic was what I was referring to.

I do not know where your idea of a conclusion of "not having a life" came from.

I remember talking about this awhile ago on other boards and with my friends about the difference between experts and enthusiasts.

An enthusiast would be someone who is interested in something above the level of a normal person and typically goes out and finds places where they can talk about it like we do. They don't know everything about the subject and sometimes don't even know what they're talking about or are mistaken (the latter mostly applies to children).

Experts are those that can actually go out and make careers or write books out of their knowledge on the subject. They make it a point to go out and study in-depth and learn as much as they can. A good example would be a movie buff who can watch a film and point out every reference or film that one film relates to among several other things.”

What I was saying was, I have had other people come up to me & tell me, after I have told them that I'm a gamer, they tell me that I need to get out more. Or they look at me weird. Or they tell me that I need to get a life.

Which now I am getting to the point of asking them if they have ever picked up a game controller? If not, then I would suggest they explore that area. But if they have played video games, then they need to play the games they want to play or when their kids aren't looking. Or like my mother, who says she doesn't have time, but supports what I say & understands what I say about gaming, thinks that I am content playing games, this is what I like to do. She has even told me she would rather see me do this (playing games) than going out & getting drunk & getting in a car accident, or hanging out with the wrong crowd (which I have done numerous times), or just being comfortable w/what I do. I usually ask, where I should go to get out. Typically these people will respond very formulatically:

1) Goto a pub or a nightclub or a bar.

Easy formula to reply to. Say that you really do not enjoy that scene--or just have not found a nightclub that is not total balls.

2) Go to a park, go for a run--get outside.

I do. I enjoy going for walks out side when it is nice. I like to think I am very physically active, and will go for walks to help sort out my stress. Though, when it is minus fourty degrees, there is five feet of snow on the ground and a rather chilly wind with it... I need to do something in doors.

I mean--maybe if I had money, I'd go shopping... but Window Shopping has a nasty tendancy to irritate me. Especially when most people I do it with have a nasty tendancy to pretend they have money they do not have when they go into the shops.

Personally, I get embarrassed if I feel like I have wasted the salesperson's time in such a manner. I mean--I understand why certain store owners hate the youth that come in an do this.. or at least treat them horribly. It is because you waste their time, looking at products you never will be able to afford, and waste the time of the sales people to handle stuff you are never going to give the store money for.

I mean, okay if I worked in the store, that kind of accusation is bad. But when I know these people--and would be hanging out with them... seeing them do it just pisses me off even more.

I don't like to go to the mall for the same reason you stated. I don't like to people watch, b/c like you, yes I don't have an awesome or banging body either. But I do accept it as part of me.

Going to the park or getting out more, my boss tells me that. Then I usually tell that person that I do get out, at night for fun in the pool, not during the day. Oh & when I go to college or take college courses online, it takes up a lot of my time. When I just want to sit back & relax with a great game. Yes I do work out, at home, in my room.

I am a sales associate & would like people to value my time as I value theirs. So you are right with what you said. Right now it's paying the bills, while I try & look for another job. But when I tell them on their guilty conscience that I get commission, they automatically feel bad. Of course I make hourly wages too. LOL. I won't say that. I do have a tendency of making people feel bad in a bad way or in a sad way. & I am a smartass when I am on a role.

& if they tell me to go to a bar or a pub, I usually say & what drink my ass off & let guys or girls hit on me & then possibly at the end of the night get raped or do something stupid?!?!! Anything bad can happen at a bar or a pub, I usually tell them & they say crap to back up what they really meant. Blah, blah blah to me. It's all blah to me. & i tell them if I want to go to a bar or pub, I'll do it my way & go to a male strip club.”

And, I still advocate that all girls need at least one gay friend.

As per going to the club... I have a few friends that have had issues with that.

One even noted for announcing that she was going to leave her drink unwatched as she went to the washroom, and that "I hope nobody puts roofies in it, as that would clearly be bad"... she never has gotten her drink roofied either.

Myself in comparison... well.. I only recently have had roofie free alcohol experiences at any large rate of occurrence.

Also it is not the temperature height that should worry you about cancer. It IS possible to go out into past 40 Degrees Centigrade weather and be fine. What you should look at is the UV index. The UV Index is probably a lot more of a decent gage on cancer than anything else.

I say that in the aspect that, I am an outdoorsy type person & I am half country & half city. I don't like the city. Whatever their background they came from in Texas, if they are a native Texan, is for example, take myself. I am half country & half city. My fiancee is from the North, PA, & makes fun of my twang TX accent. That's fine, b/c I can't talk like a northern & just sound plain stupid. I don't see how northern people talk the way they do & I think it's hilarious. So both sides think each others' way of talking is funny. Also, I grew up around a couple farm animals.....my parents are simpletons. My dad being a farm boy all his life. My mother being a girl from the suburbs. My brother who now dips, & smokes & drinks.....oih, a lot of Texans down here dip. Bad habit too. Ewww.
But there may be a difference between me & the other Texans you talked to.....referring to their knowledge......I like to educate myself on certain subjects, ones that pique my interest or ones that I don't want to, but just handy enough to keep around in case I need to back up my point to some idiot.
Yes I have rode on horses, which btw is VERY fun to do. & if it helps with everyone's curiosity......all there is to date or before I got engaged was farm boys, cowboys & country boys.
One thing, about most Texans is they don't like other out of staters coming in to Texas & creating havoc. We are a very down home, loving type of people, caring, hospitality & would even give others the clothes we don't wear. A good room to stay in if something has happened to them, but we expect that person to find a job & start working, either to eventually work on their own & find a place on their own or like some out of staters, fall in love with the Texans' daughter & get married. Lol. That's what happened to me & my fiancee, but he never came to live w/us. Lol.
& some Texans are very racist & will still fly the Stars & Bars flag aka the Confederate Flag. I see it as heritage, not hate. Others are a little diff. & even say "The South Will Rise Again."
So yes I may be different from the others you have met that are from Texas.
Btw, what have the other Texans said? I am curious to know.

“Uh... again it is not a "lack of knowledge" thing.. so much as a few very specific "blind spots in their knowledge". These people tend to be very intelligent, and on subjects they know about, tend to be worth talking to.

We all have limits on what we can and cannot do. And well, I have noticed that Texans appear to share a few of those lack of aptitudes in certain areas.

I know when I was in school, all through out school till I was a senior in HS......I was in Speech class.....b/c I did have a learning disability. Something about how I couldn't remember information the teacher would tell the class.....& when I was in elementary school, I had a hard time pronouncing my R's and S's & I think F's too. But eventually worked at it & overcame it.
