DESCRIPTION
Billed as a "fantasy role-playing game with a science fiction twist," Geneforge continues the efforts by Spiderweb Software to breathe new life into the traditional third-person 2D RPG genre. The premise is simple: the powers of the Shapers are at risk and you must fight a usurper who threatens their secrets — or will you join him? Available via Internet, players can enjoy 17 of the 77 sections of this huge adventure on a trial basis, through the shareware version, or purchase the full game. As in other Spiderweb games, players shape the adventure through the actions of their characters, using brains, brawn, or magic depending on personal preference.
Players choose to be a Shaper, Guardian, or Agent during character creation by distributing starting points in five major areas, including four abilities (strength, dexterity, intelligence, and endurance), as well as sub-sets of combat, magic, shaping, and general skills. The frail Shapers are dedicated to the art of making and altering creatures. Agents, under the command of Shapers, are independent, stealthy, and violent, while Guardians man the front lines in combat, defending Shapers, and serving as guards and escorts. Statistics in spell energy, experience, skill points, and weight (encumbrance limits) are tracked during gameplay, as well as ten possible magical effects that can be imposed on characters. ~ Michael L.
