DESCRIPTION
Anointed by the games media as Microsoft's first "killer app" for its Xbox 360, Epic Games' Gears of War is a futuristic third-person shooter emphasizing tactical action over run-and-gun battles. Players are thrust in a climactic clash between what's left of humankind and a swarming underground race called the Locust Horde. The main protagonist is Marcus Fenix, a once disgraced soldier looking to redeem himself by leading a ragtag squad against the monstrous threat.
Since the alien army vastly outnumbers the team, players must use the post-apocalyptic world to their advantage, such as seeking cover behind dumpsters, pillars, cars, rubble, and other objects. The developer has adapted its award-winning Unreal technology to create interactive environments with a physics-based damage system. Players, for instance, can shoot down structures to forge new routes or opportunities to trap the enemy. Up to three squad mates will accompany Fenix in each mission, with basic commands such as "advance," "hold," or "freelance" available to guide them.
A behind-the-shoulder view similar to the one employed in Capcom's Resident Evil 4 is the default perspective in Gears of War. Weapons include an assortment of grenades, pistols, assault rifles, and other long-range blasters, many of which offer a means to engage enemies in melee combat. The Locust Horde is not averse to lunging, rushing, or gnawing at soldiers, so players have the opportunity to perform grisly finishing moves by quickly tapping specific button sequences during close encounters. Cooperative support for two players is offered throughout the campaign, and up to eight can battle each other in team-oriented modes via Xbox Live. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide

Soon enough Gears of War seemed to be the sonic the Hedgehog or Super Mario of Xbox. The blood and gore and the story gave this game the longevity that few games have had and kept me salivating for more. If you've been living under a rock then you have no idea what I am talking about and thus you should pick up a copy yesterday. Oh and by the way the Locusts are coming again in 2010...”

I usually play along, something like "wait, I was just eating some fromage in my baguette, but now I'm ready to play". Or I'll face them head on with something like "Don't be cocky, you won because you played better than me, not because you're American". Or just some plain ol' lecturing.
It is my experience that when confronted to meaning of their words, most people will stand corrected. But what applies in my case doesn't have to be true in your case, because those are 2 different kinds and degrees of prejudice.
It has happened to me dozens of times on XBL, so by now I'm more amused than angry when it happens.
And I can always quit and hope that the next people I play with have an IQ greater than a bulldog.

“With online activities in general it is the fact that people can insult others and get away with it because the other person will never find out who they are. Being online multiplies the worst in people a thousand times. You take some arrogant person in real life and they will be worse online because you don't know who they are. As in the case of guys being mean, and from what I am reading you are implying extra mean though correct me if I am wrong, the only thing I can come up with is ego. Gears of War is a visually beautiful game with an excellent gameplay style that brings together many different mechanics in an intuitive way. Which only makes it more of shame that it is wasted on an absolute crap story that makes the original DOOM story sound like Shakespeare. It took me 2 years to beat this game because I just could not care enough about the characters or what they were doing. The story boils down to, "shoot them because they look different and hit X when you're told otherwise you're a filthy commie." You play a bunch of no-neck steroid junkies who all talk in deep gravely voices, probably to hide some insecurities or something. The violence is so absurdly gory, with geysers of blood shooting out of enemies and leaving nothing but gib-soup in your wake, as to almost be comical. Oddly enough, despite the absolute shit story, the dialogue and character interaction is written incredibly well. Delta squad has a very entertaining team dynamic that's sounds authentic and is actually fun to listen to, with Cole making it all worthwhile.”
