DESCRIPTION
Anointed by the games media as Microsoft's first "killer app" for its Xbox 360, Epic Games' Gears of War is a futuristic third-person shooter emphasizing tactical action over run-and-gun battles. Players are thrust in a climactic clash between what's left of humankind and a swarming underground race called the Locust Horde. The main protagonist is Marcus Fenix, a once disgraced soldier looking to redeem himself by leading a ragtag squad against the monstrous threat.
Since the alien army vastly outnumbers the team, players must use the post-apocalyptic world to their advantage, such as seeking cover behind dumpsters, pillars, cars, rubble, and other objects. The developer has adapted its award-winning Unreal technology to create interactive environments with a physics-based damage system. Players, for instance, can shoot down structures to forge new routes or opportunities to trap the enemy. Up to three squad mates will accompany Fenix in each mission, with basic commands such as "advance," "hold," or "freelance" available to guide them.
A behind-the-shoulder view similar to the one employed in Capcom's Resident Evil 4 is the default perspective in Gears of War. Weapons include an assortment of grenades, pistols, assault rifles, and other long-range blasters, many of which offer a means to engage enemies in melee combat. The Locust Horde is not averse to lunging, rushing, or gnawing at soldiers, so players have the opportunity to perform grisly finishing moves by quickly tapping specific button sequences during close encounters. Cooperative support for two players is offered throughout the campaign, and up to eight can battle each other in team-oriented modes via Xbox Live. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide

“This game for me, has been one of my most random games yet. By that I mean that I hate its story. But love the gameplay! Its not that the game has a bad story. But I have to read the novel to merely appreciate it in depth. Which ruins the point to even care in my case... However, I have to say I have had good times on this! Between Marcus and his team just ranting messing around. To how you just see some bro fun in using a chainsaw! Frankly, you come to see how violent games used to be fun in this series. And how we forget that till you shotgun a Grub in the spine! Like a Bawss! The only thing is the game is short. And story comes short. And only till the third game do you even have a half good story to enjoy. Otherwise you will just have a story equal to a dysfunctional hunting trip gone awry due to alcohol and intoxication! Which is why I say its random. That is however, if you don't read the novel. I haven't read much my self, but I did read enough to say it works. But honestly...I seen games with more gameplay, and more content, and pull off longer and more memorable stories! And somehow you get people saying this game did to...so its all up to you. But this game was meant to be memorable in gameplay. Not story! So keep that in mind. And if yiy enjoy both, you will love the novel to if you notice the massive gaps in the story in all three games! With that. Enjoy that shotty. And rev up that chainsaw!!!”

“The game that help put EPIC on the map. A solid 3rd person shooter with lots of tense and fast paced action. Highly recommended for shooter fans of all types especially ones that like a good story to go along with their action.”

“So arguably, before Gears of War, cover-based shooting mechanics were not very prevalent in video games. Of course here and there, the mechanic existed, but this game had set them through the roof. I cringe at games that misuse the cover mechanics and litter the battlefield with chest-high walls. Mass Effect had better implementation of cover-based shooting. Gears of War story is compelling, but the gameplay and the achievements are not very engaging. Completing the game once and never picking it up from the shelf again is how I feel about this one.
New installments in the series have definitely refined this gem, but the core stays rotten. Too much reliance on cover, with bulky, yet faceless character cast.”

“Loved this game, this is what owning a Xbox is all about ... Gears of War. Great world which sucks you into a war with a fantastic emeny in the locust. Graphics also hold up well today, but its the cover systems action that make the gears of war gameplay so much fun to play, in sigle player story or mutiplayer Co-op And if its mutilplayer you want you have loads to chose from with deathmatch, team deathmatch, Co-op campaign mode and more.
Only bettered by the sequal. ”
