DESCRIPTION
The Great War rages on. The GTA and Vasudans are putting all they can into destroying the threat of the Shivans, a dark species who is out for destruction. Only extreme effort by the GTA and Vasudans combined will result in a victory.
Fast-forward to now, the year is 2367. The Great War has apparently ended. The endless line of bombers, fighters and capital ships, the fighting has stopped. Now the Vasudans and the GTA can re-build there meek forces to bring themselves back to prosperity. Although, on the outskirts of the Gamma Draconis System, your most feared nemesis has returned and they are wondering what happened to their scouting party...
You must now ready yourself for a new and more aggressive swarm of enemy forces that are not very pleased about your resistance. Over 20 new weapons will help you disrupt, destroy and intercept this increased enemy threat. Also, many new enemy devices will be encountered such as large beam weapons that can cut a large Capital Ship in two. You'll need your weapons though, as over 70 new ships are present in the game and they are much bigger and badder than before. Once you've completed the tutorial, go try your luck on the campaign that features 30 new missions that will challenge you like never before. Missions range from hit & run operations to large scale assaults, where you can command up to 11 squadmates in unison.
Freespace 2 also includes the "FRED 2" mission editor feature, where you'll be able to edit your own single-player and multi-player missions so that they are as intense or varied as you see fit. Speaking of multi-player, there is an extensive multi-player mode, where up to 9 people can go up against each other in teams or straight out for the crown of being the best Internet player.
You thought Descent: Freespace — The Great War was a challenge, you thought Descent: Freespace — Silent Threat was as intense as it got, but you ain't seen nothing yet. Get ready for the real battle for your life! ~ Glenn Wigmore, All Game Guide

“Needed some classic space sim action, so I broke this one out and played a few missions. This really is one of the better ones out there. IMHO, it still holds up VERY well.”

“A space-shooter with so much fun has yet to cross my way again. Even better with updated graphics and all that from SCP.”

“This is probably one of the most immersive space combat simulators I've ever played and second only to TIE Fighter and X-Wing in my humble opinion. It has a good story, varied missions, and an epic finale that put me on the edge of my seat. The space dogfighting is extremely well done and is very fun. It is especially epic when you are in a furball with two massive captial ships duking it out in the background. Highly recommended for all space sim enthusiasts.”

“Apparently I'm a coward. Could have sworn I was told to be return to base. A bug or maybe I should have waited a bit more before returning.. At least I know how to beat that mission now.”

“FreeSpace 2 really captured my attention. I'm pretty sure I didn't play any other game until I completed this one. If you like space sim games, this is definitely one to pick up. ”

“I heard how good this game was and picked it up for a couple bucks. Thanks to the free source project that adds improved graphics and sound, this game is pretty fun. It also has TrackIR 5 support...”

“Great story and fun space combat. Better graphics and ships than the original Freespace game as well. I think this was one of the first (and few) games I played that had really great voice acting. ”

“Even better than the first Freespace, and once again, Freespace Open, made it tons better. I've got more stick time on this space combat sim than any other.”

“Slightly less impressive ship design more than made up for by vastly improved environments and the promotion of monolithic capital ships from set-pieces to awe-inspiring engines of destruction.”
