DESCRIPTION

Free Realms is a family-friendly MMO from Sony in which players can choose to engage in a variety of different gameplay mechanics. Traditional combat-driven adventuring is a potential option, as is exploration, building, pet rearing, fashion design, and social networking, among others. Players begin by creating and customizing an avatar, then choosing from a number of different character classes, including Chef, Ninja, Archer, Wizard, Postman, Blacksmith, Medic, and Kart Racer. Continuous play in any single class helps characters level up and earn new abilities, weapons, quests, and outfits, but gamers are free to switch between classes as often as they like.

Designed to double as a social networking site, the game assigns each player a unique web page where users can share images, links, and videos, and Free Realms also features a number of smaller mini-games, including a virtual trading-card game, complete with a real-world counterpart courtesy of Topps. As its name implies, Free Realms costs nothing to download or play, though gamers can pay a $4.99 per month subscription fee to unlock five more character classes, 400 extra items and quests, and ranked leaderboards. ~ Christopher Brown, All Game Guide

“Free Realms is an awesome casual MMO. It easily ranks as one of my favorite games because it is a no pressure, relaxed, fun game.

A lot of people don't like it, though, because it's too "kiddy." It's not challenging enough for them. But, Free Realms isn't about challenge. It's about exploration and fun.”

“So...you want to me describe the different areas of the world? You want me to describe the different dungeons? I'm sorry, but that's a bit much. If you want to see what the areas are like, just log in and play for a bit. As xoaks said, it's free.

Now, they do reward players for exploring. Each area has "hidden places" that you can find. Once you find all the hidden places, you get experience or a cool item that can only be gotten through the exploration track. (In fact, they have a job called "Adventurer" which levels by exploring.) Also, there are items that you can find as you explore which are part of collections. If you complete the collections, you get experience and, sometimes, a cool item.

I know that they are working on a new area to add...hopefully, soonish. If you look at the Free Realms map, there are already two or three places listed that you can't get to yet.”

“I know. That's what's so frustrating about it! I love Free Realms but when I compare their combat to other games....Free Realms falls short. It's not very satisfying at all.

We need more skills or, barring that, at least more interesting loot! Getting the same item over and over in different colors just doesn't cut it.”
