DESCRIPTION
Capcom's 1989 arcade hit makes its 16-bit debut as a side-scrolling beat-'em-up with five levels of punching, kicking, and pummeling action. While the basic storyline is the same as the coin-op game — players must rescue Jessica Haggar from the evil gang known as Mad Gear — there are only two playable characters instead of three, and there's no cooperative play. Players can choose Jessica's boyfriend, Cody, and her father, Mike Haggar, but the agile Guy is missing in action.
Despite some changes in the amount of onscreen enemies (only three appear at once) and the removal of some objectionable content, the action is otherwise the same, as players take on an assortment of thugs loyal to Mad Gear throughout the dangerous streets of Metro City. Moves vary based on the character you select, with Cody able to perform martial arts and Haggar skilled in wrestling-style attacks. Located within the slums, subways, parks, and other regions of the city are barrels and crates filled with helpful food to replenish health, treasure for bonus points, and weapons such as bats, pipes, and swords for additional attack power. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide
