Not to be confused with the better-known world conquest game of the same name, this is a British space combat game that feels like Time Pilot crossed with Star Raiders, only less energetic. In a porthole-shaped overhead view, you fly between star systems and bases, answering S.O.S. calls, engaging in slow-paced combat with rather inert, unmenacing alien ships. Every now and then the game is interrupted as medals are handed out for shooting aliens. Venture into interstellar space and encounter mysterious white boxes that threaten to hover towards you and take away a small amount of hit points.
Empire has an interesting open-endedness to its mission structure and 360 degree navigation. As for graphics, they run the gamut from surreal, minimalist and weird to just really primitive. ~ John Gorenfeld, All Game Guide
