Life is peaceful in the small town of Onett. Everything is right with the world.

Suddenly, you're startled awake by a loud crash. You grab your cap and head outside to see what caused the noise. After climbing a hill and sneaking by the police, you learn the truth: It's a meteor!

So begins the expedition of a young boy to save the world in Earthbound, a humorous RPG set not in the world of dragons, knights and wizards, but right here on Earth.

“You can have a well told story without the character saying a word. Again, it's all about how the character shows him/herself. I never played FFX, but look at Dragon Age vs. Mass Effect. One of the complaints I've heard about ME is that sometimes, people choose a dialogue option and Shephard says something they wouldn't have expected at all! With a silent protagonist, you create your end of the dialogue. I've never played ME, but for me, my favorite RPG heroes are always silent. Crono's fist pumping or drawing his sword to show that he'll defend someone is more memorable to me than "We'll help you," and his sacrifice to Lavos needed no "Nooooooo!" to make an impact on me. In fact, I think it would have detracted from the moment.

Dialogue is good, but I really don't think the Mother series would be the same with it. They're coming of age stories, and with a silent protagonist, I think it's a lot easier to empathize with the main character without a writer putting words in your mouth. ”

“@Dengar You're not really a silent protagonist in Dragon Age: Origins. You actually get to choose what to say, which I'd say that I probably like the most, especially in games like a certain rpg that is my favorite where sometimes your answers can literally be a full paragraph, and spoken like a true intellectual.

That is one of many reasons why Planescape Torment to me is the best game/isometric interactive novel ever made/written.

“Started ME1 yesterday and yeah I know about the "Oh I thought you would say something else" but remember that they minimize an option of 20-30 words in a 3 words "title" that tries to tell you how the character feels and not really what exactly he/she will say.

ie: if you have an option "get lost." your char might say something like "You know, last time I've seen you I had to hold myself from shoving my pistol up yours. Out of my way.".

in FFX. Tidus is the main character. You hear his thoughts, feel his feelings and you end up being the character. That is how I like to play my RPGs.

On the other hand there is some RPGs that do great without that kind of measure. They are mostly centred on gameplay and story in general than the character itself. I guess I am more the type of RPG fan in which you base yourself on the hero rather than a given situation and a team with minimal background.

Whenever I play a RPG I want to explore with my character, to learn with him. I don't want to go in a foreign place and be the only one that never had a clue that such place even existed. In other word, I want in a RPG the protagonist to be like me: a total noob that learn everything as he go along in his journey.”

“I see what you're saying. I suppose the DA characters, to me, still seem silent, since in a world of voice overs, you're the only one who doesn't really talk (well, you kinda do, but not in dialogue).

Still, some of the quirkiness of the game wouldn't have worked out if you always got to respond. Seeing how people react to a simple "yes" or "no" is interesting, especially when they read really into it. It's like talking to some crazy people that sometimes approach you.

For example, I remember one time someone asked me "Do you believe in Jesus?" If you consider the fact that there is evidence that the person the stories are based on seemed to be real (though the miracles would be difficult to verify), it's hard to say no to. Plus it's still a name in common use. I was going to hit on these points, but all that came out was "Yes, b-" before the person began complimenting me on my intelligence and talking about how I must be such a good person and... well, saying a lot of other things without allowing me a word, before finally saying good bye and going off to ask someone else. If only the village in Peaceful Rest Valley was real ;).”

“Sorry, the above comment was to Fallout. I see what you're saying though Link, and I gotta respect that. I feel the same way too sometimes. I REALLY enjoyed Dragon Age because of that. I didn't read any spoilers the first time through, and I wanted to kill the dragon my any means necessary. During my campaign, I tainted the ashes, hoping I could recruit the cult and get their help. I lost Leliana as a result, who I was also romancing at the time, so that portion of the game had a strong impact on me.”

I think Link is a one of a kinda character in video games today, usually silent protagonists are just that, empty slates, they don't have any personality whatsoever, which is why Link is one of my favorite video game characters, he may be silent, but he's there.”

“I've never thought of him as really having many "minions" either. Although in a few of the zelda games he is shown cooperating with a few individuals, most of the villains seem to be rather unconnected. I'm almost reminded of Cthulu: His presence starts to drive the world mad just by being there, without him having to directly influence anything. Now, again, yeah, I know that isn't always the case, but as far as villains go, he seems to mostly stand alone...”

From what I recall, he was just a corrupting force. He didn't go out and hire baddies and guards and stuff like Emperor Palpatine, but he had a way of making things get messed up all around him.”

“@EarthboundX Yeah, Link may have emotions, but that's all he has. It's not something that's really deep in the slightest, and in fact it feels like just about every character in every zelda game is flat and annoying. The larger than life overuse of emotions from just about every character in the zelda games really drag down the quality of the games.

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy every Zelda game out there that I can think of, but I really wish that the dialogue and emotions, which I find to be extremely cheesy would get toned down immensively, so we can enjoy what the games really have to offer. The Really fun dungeons.”

“I was playing Mother on the emulator on my phone for awhile... not real sure why I stopped. Gotta finish that sometime. EarthBound was one of my favorite SNES games. Probably one of my favorite RPGs of all time. It's, like, Skies of Arcadia Legends, Paper Mario, and EarthBound. FF notwithstanding.”

“On Ganon's little "minion" thing.

In the first game, Hyrulian Fantasy, he not only controlled them, he summoned them on whim to attack Link. The issue is, the minions just had varying levels of intelligence. Tectites would just jump around. The skeleton warriors could accept simple orders. Not much beyond this though. Moblins were, likely, his highest class of units. Having varying levels of intelligence.

Heck, a fair amount of the Moblins suffered from myopia--yet still did their job. This was why the Moblins' spears would be summoned back to the Moblins' hands--as they likely would not be able to find it after they threw it.

Enough of these minions were left over, after Ganon finally took his last dirt nap, that they tried to go about reviving him.

Going back to LttP--the Light World is a little harder to gauge. Why? Well--Agrohnym really. It has never really resolved whether Agrohnym was a puppet, a minion or a disguise of Ganon. Though, it is clear that a fair amount of the palace guard were Dark World monsters sent into the Light World. Merely disguised as human.

The Dark World, exists, entirely as a reflection of the heart of a twisted person in control of the triforce. If a balanced and kind hearted person gains the triforce, it becomes the Sacred Realm--or the Golden Realm.

The Dark World is none other than Ganon's world. It exists as the current state of his mind.

In OoT he had minions. He had the Gerudo, the Redeads (necromanced dead people), the Moblins--and most of the dungeons were his doing. Ganon appears to show some ability in summoning creatures to do his bidding throughout the entire series. It is best demonstrated in Legend of Zelda clips shown on the Super Mario Brothers Super Show. Wher when he needed a minion, he would simply summon it from his reserves of monsters.

What happened in OoT, was much of the same. The attack on the Deku Tree, Dodongo Cavern--though, not so sure about Lord Jabu Jabu.

Then we move forward seven years. The Temples are all filled with creatures Ganon has summoned--specifically to keep the seven sages from awakening. In one case, he even possesses a sage via the two Witches, Twin Rova, to keep her from awakening, and to have her attack the Hero of Time. Taking out two birds with one stone.

Now, some of his minions do have minds of their own--though, none go to the level to be a Starscream or anything.

On the topic of silent protagonists... I prefer them... mostly due to a large amount of disagreement I have with the lines of talking heroes. Mostly because they either respond to a situation in an annoying fashion, or they tend to carry around the idiot ball too often.

In a fight between Ganondorf and Gigyas? Hard to say--as well, Gigyas' attacks generally consist a fetus raping children as they attempt to abort it (a short summary).

I mean--I suppose that Gigyas could have been Claus from Mother 3 (there are some that suggest this may be the case). But well, we have to ask: Gigyas before, or after, he ate the Apple of Enlightenment? Before, he is a pretty powerful wizard. Afterwards he pretty much has became Azathoth. Which would equate Gigyas to being beyond C'thulhu. As C'thulhu was merely the gate keeper to the elder gods. With Azathoth being an actual Elder God. (then we get into Y'oggosepoth and Narlythotep who exist as "guides" of sorts past C'thulhu)

I mean--even supposing that Claus is an earlier incarnation of Gigyas, we have to deal with a Masked Man vs. Ganondorf fight.

I mean--considering that both Ganon and Gigyas are dead (Ganon at the end of Hyrulian Fantasy and Gigyas at the end of Earthbound)

I thought Gigyas was Gigue (sp?) from Mother, just named in a way that would make it easier to say his name in English. Seeing as Claus died at the end of Mother 3, and that Mother 3 seems to take place far from Mother 2 (I'm not even sure what time period it's exactly supposed to be due to the time travel element), I can't see how that could be. However, as we've seen from the Ganon discussion, I may forget/miss things, so I'm all ears!”

Well--it is mostly noting a few things mentioned about Gigue's origin in Mother 1. He was not a normal person to be leading the Starmen, and they had done something off. Hence the need to grab Maria and George from Earth to help raise it. Something about Gigue being based partially on some human element.

Now in Mother 1, various elements o Gigue's back story are mentioned that have just too many parallels to Claus' & Masked Man's back story in Mother 3. Kind of having people question if Claus is somehow revived into Gigue.

As per noting when and where stuff happen in conjunction to Mother 3... well, it really does not help that everybody had their mind wiped before coming onto the island it takes place on. With new memories being given to them.”

“Eh, I'm still finding it hard to believe. Is there a link to the specifics involved? From what I recall, Gigue was an alien raised by George and Marie who had a weakness to a lullaby, whereas Claus was essentially a Chimera with very little left of his humanity, kinda like Vader. Aside from being from potentially different times and places, I just can't see how a little boy is an alien.”

Except for YuGiOh: Duel Academy. I mean, as ludicrous as a school popping up for people to learn how to properly play a Children's Card Game... YuGiOh is actually so poorly designed, that I can see how it would require such a school.

I mean--when the topic of class mostly revolves around, "how to properly munchkin" it kind of makes me think less of a franchise.”
