The Turbografx 16's answer to the enormously popular Gauntlet series, Dungeon Explorer one-ups the original Gauntlet arcade game by letting up to five (as opposed to four) players cooperate in exploring the various dungeons and vanquishing the various creatures. Also, the game has eight (as opposed to four) playable characters, each rated according to agility, attack, strength and intelligence. In addition to the expected weaponry (daggers, darts, axes and the like), each character can perform white as well as black magic. The characters in this game are small, the animation is minimal, and the controls and music take some getting used to, but the bosses are huge and colorful, the storyline is solid, and the action-oriented gameplay is enjoyable. Dungeon Explorer is virtually impossible to beat solo (creatures oftentimes overwhelm the playfield), and, as in Gauntlet, multi-player action is far more enjoyable than going it alone. ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide
