The spawn of the 1981 arcade smash hit Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Junior is one of the best videogame sequels ever produced. While not necessarily superior to its progenitor, DKJ is more varied and difficult to master. It also sports more colors, sharper graphics, better character animation and a faster climbing technique. Gameplay still revolves around running, climbing and jumping, but the action takes place in the jungle instead of on buildings. Players control the title character in an attempt to rescue his dad, who is being held by Mario, the hero from Donkey Kong. Players release papa Kong from his cage by navigating vines (or chains) and platforms while avoiding or dropping fruit on Snapjaws and egg dropping birds. Other elements of gameplay include pushing keys up a series of vines and avoiding electrodes in Mario's hideout. As in the original, this game has four different screens. ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide
