DESCRIPTION
The sequel to Donkey Kong (1981) and Donkey Kong Junior (1982), Donkey Kong 3 dispenses with the climbing game format and instead employs shooter elements from the likes of Galaxian, Galaga and other upward-firing alien invasion games. Players control Stanley the Bugman, a largely forgotten hero whose job is to keep a vine-climbing Donkey Kong at or near the top of the screen by spraying him in the nether regions with bug repellent, while avoiding and shooting swarming insects. What makes this shooter unique, other than its absurd premise, are the platforms near the bottom of the screen that Stanley can run and jump on. A highly underrated game, Donkey Kong 3 spawned a very nice NES port, but it remains an obscure relative to other games in the series. ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide
