Disney's Treasure Planet: Treasure Racer is a spin-off from the 2002 animated film and, as the title suggests, features racing — in this instance, in ships with solar sails. Players owning Treasure Racer, as well as Disney's Treasure Planet: Etherium Rescue and Disney's Treasure Planet: Broadside Blast can unlock a free fourth game, Disney's Treasure Planet: Ship Shape; taken together, they make up the Disney Treasure Planet: Training Academy. The player, as a freshmen cadet, is mentored in the games by Jim, who is in his second year at the interstellar academy, and events take place approximately one year following the end of the movie.
While the other games focus on adventure and training, Treasure Racer features ten tracks and six types of ships, each with unique strengths. On-screen displays show the track layout, position, time, laps, checkpoint markers and buoys, speed gauge, radar, mini-map, and turbo power. Tracks are unlocked by ranking among the top three race speeds, achieved in part by collecting power-ups (reinforced hull, engine upgrades, power rudder, and Arcturian Solar Crystals) while employing strategies encompassing momentum, ramming, and portals. Treasure Racer offers two-player races on tracks unlocked during single-player mode. ~ Michael L. House, All Game Guide
