DESCRIPTION
Hostile aliens and claustrophobia rule the day in Dead Space, a survival horror game in the vein of the classic film Alien. Dead Space takes place in the distant future when Earth's lust for raw materials has extended deep into the galaxy, and giant ships roam the cosmos mining planets for resources. Gamers climb into the spacesuit of systems engineer Isaac Clarke, sent with a team of investigators to the massive USG Ishimura to determine why communications have gone dead. Once aboard, Clarke discovers that the more than 1,000 crewmembers, including his love interest Nicole, all seem to be missing, dead, or transformed into hideous alien mutants. To make matters worse, Clarke's transport ship is destroyed, his fellow investigators are slaughtered, and he is forced to scramble through the Ishimura's labyrinthine corridors weaponless and alone.
The game's action takes place from a third-person perspective, and the narrative is revealed in classic survival horror fashion through messages scrawled in blood, the dying utterances of mortally wounded crewmembers, and any discarded logs or journals players may stumble upon. Gamers can loot corpses for credits which can then be used in the ship's many automated vending machines to purchase weapons, upgrade Clarke's space suit, and gain access to restricted areas. Much of the ship's interior has been damaged and thus lacks oxygen or gravity, creating a number of environmental puzzles, and making choices regarding upgrades exceedingly important — powerful weapons offer little solace to a player devoid of oxygen. However, choosing the correct weaponry is also crucial, because the creatures that dwell within the Ishimura are terrifyingly powerful, and unlike most games, the action in Dead Space doesn't pause while players check their journal, change weapons, or reload. ~ Christopher Brown, All Game Guide

“A not so typical survival horror game, taking into account the fact that you have more than enough firepower to plow through your enemies. The dark atmosphere may not scare the really hardcore survivalists out there but there are moments when you cannot help but turn the lights on. All in all a great game with a decent plot with its own twists and turns and brutal kills to top it all of. 5/5.”

“When the topic of atmosphere comes up, Dead Space certainly knows how to do it right...and it is pretty damn creepy. First off this game needs to be played alone with minimal lighting. Headphones or a system capable of surround sound is essential to obtain the full atmosphere...then get ready.
This game is a perfect mix of combat and story that really gives gamers a memorable and exciting experience for a survival horror. The well designed levels and the setting are rattling because you always feel alone, except for the creatures which always seem to be lurking around you. There are a fair share of startling moments within the game, but what I found most unsettling is the dreary and horrific scenes that you experience as the story progresses. Overall this is a great game that I would recommend to any survival horror fan. The story can be a bit confusing at times but the experience is well rounded and thoroughly enjoyable.”

“It took me a while to get into Dead Space. I was first introduced to it through a friend, and it looked very dull and seemed as if he was just walking through grey corridors and occasionally things would jump out at him. Very boring.
It wasn't until the game was on sale through steam that I decided to buy it and give it a proper go. Initially I had the same thoughts as when I was first introduced to Dead Space, and it wasn't until I stopped playing after an hour that I found myself thinking about the story and what the FUCK is going on on board that ship!? I had to play more. After seeing more than the standard necromorph, exploring the ship and realising there's an upgrade system, I started to feel like I should've given this game a better chance when it first came out.
The ship looks very boring, but it's fitting for the story as it's a purpose built ship and is not meant to look varied and interesting. It does however, have different sections making it seem like a fuctional space vessel. They also lend themselves very well to being the setting for a survival horror.
The best thing about this game is the atmosphere it creates. This is partially down to the music which serves very well in creating a creepy feeling and compliments the action very well with sudden bursts of intense shrieking stringed instruments as a necromorph jumps out a vent at you, making the shock even more impactful.
Dead Space also does very well in keeping you on your toes. You may see a glimpse of a necromorph or hear something fall, leading you to try to predict the game and guess that something will burst out at you or an even is about to happen, but the game doesn't neccesarily always deliver the satisfaction of something happening, leaving you on the edge of your seat. Sometimes it will deliver false threats though, such as a sudden movement of an object accompanied by a short and sharp burst of music. I've often found myself shooting at a malfuctioning door or something falling over!
The only offputting thing about this game is one part which seemed very out of place where you had to shoot asteroids that are pummeling the ship. It was VERY difficult and I think it ruined the pace of the game. I stopped playing for a few days as I found it too stressful. A few more fails and I may have given up ohn the game completely.
Aside from that I had a great time playing, and I've just purchased Dead Space 2...”
