DESCRIPTION
Damnation aims to take HD-generation shooter fans to new heights, combining third-person perspective gunplay with 3D platforming in vertically expansive levels. Players have access to an array of almost superhuman acrobatic abilities, as well as to an arsenal of powerful, steampunk-themed rifles, revolvers, shotguns, and machineguns. The game is geared for fast-paced, frantic action, and has no "sticky cover" system, as in many contemporary shooters. However,Damnation's hero can climb ladders, ropes, and pipes, and can leap, shimmy, and flip his way up towering structures and across abysmal drops with the press of a button or two. He can take a shot from nearly any position, even hanging upside-down from one hand. Damnation does not use health bars or gauges in the display, but players do have access to another useful mode of special sight. The game's heroes can use a "Spirit Vision" ability to see all the other combatants on the map, even through walls and other cover. This wall-hack view looks similar to a hazy, infrared display, in which enemies show up with red auras and allies with blue.
Damnation is set in an alternate reality history in which the United States' Civil War has waged on for decades. In the main campaign, players take the role of Hamilton Rourke, a heroic outlaw trying to save both the Union and the Confederacy from evil designs of a warmongering industrialist. Often, the player can see a large mission objective, such as a bridge or monument, from the starting point of the level, and part of the challenge is the adventure of finding the way there. Multiple paths exist, but players have no mini-map or directional arrows to guide them. Co-op play is supported throughout the campaign, with the second player taking the role of one of the allies that accompanies Rourke through the scripted levels. The game also offers multiplayer competition, in which the ability to move well vertically as well as horizontally is paramount, and no one can hide from Spirit Vision. Damnation began as an award-winning mod for Unreal Tournament 2004, and the retail version is built on built on a later edition of the Unreal game engine. It is the first game by the concept creation company Blue Omega Entertainment and was developed with the original mod's creators. ~ T.J. Deci, All Game Guide

“This game looks like it'd be really cool. The alternate timeline of the Civil War was appealing to me but this game pretty much sucked big time. The graphics were laughable at best. The gameplay was very repetitive. There's not very many guns to choose from and the instructions on which way to go for missions and junk are godawful. The only thing that I thought was decent was the co-op campaign.”

“Such a terrible game. I only got this game to try out the co-op offline split-screen play. It was so bad, my girlfriend thought so too. The aiming was terrible, and you spent most of your time doing acrobats it felt like. It is truly unfortunate because the game had so much potential. It had a decent story, potentially cool character back-stories, co-op campaign, etc. However, the gameplay is so bad that it cannot be overlooked. The mechanics force you to deal with the flaws of the game which take away from any of the elements of the game that may of been good.”

“This game had a rather interesting story, which is why I rented it in the first place. Set back in the civil war but in a alternate reality, were the civil war lasted longer than it did, both sides not gaining much ground until a war profiteer started selling weapons to either side (Preston or Prescott, I forget what). Prescott then decided that he would take over the country and he did so by using Steam technology and his own type of weapons. You play a band of rebels trying to stop him.
However, I Hate this game with a passion, 1 star doesn't even deserve to be given. I will be honest, the story and idea behind the game, sound very intriguing.. but the entire game just does not work. The enemy AI is clunky, either standing in broad daylight for you to shoot, or having expert accuracy and gunning you down in seconds. The Friendly AI is worse, your 2 AI controlled companions will often run into the open and get shot down, or stand behind a wall and shoot it. The action plays out as a platform crawler, but its slow and just doesn't work. Tomb raider with its faulty camera did a better job at this. The dialogue is flat and boring, to me it sounds like someone just walked into the recording booth and recorded their lines as they read the script for the first time.
My room mate and I tried to play 2 player mode, which we discovered a game breaking flaw. Flashing onto the screen were prompts on how to perform certain moves, I was slightly faster than my friend and got through the first few jumps. Meanwhile the initial prompt appeared on his half of the screen, however I arrived at a spot and a cutscene happened. It teleported my roomie to where I was.. with the prompt now frozen dead center in the middle of his screen and would not go away.
All in all... this game is bad, a great idea ruined by poor controls, faulty AI, and ugly graphics.
