Once upon a time there was an ancient civilization, known as the Shee, that lived on a world called Albia. They fled their home world in a vast spaceship with four terrariums filled with indigenous species from their planet. As they approached their new home, a particularly nasty species, the Grendels, attacked the Shee causing them to flee en masse and travel to the surface of their new planet, leaving everything and abandoning all the other species.
But, that's not what this story is all about. It's now been a thousand years since that event and a tremendous war of survival is being waged on the giant spaceship as it orbits the new world. Two major species are vying for control, the Norns and Grendels, with a third, the Ettins, insinuating themselves into the situation with their own personal agenda. The Grendels are the same nasty bunch that drove the Shee away, while the Norns are a peace-loving group that needs your help to survive.
Creatures 3 is a life-development simulation. Your task is to help guide the Norns on their quest for survival, pure and simple. Although besieged by the violent, rude and wicked Grendels who use their acute sense of smell to track down and steal Norn eggs, your charges are inherently strong creatures who can be taught to talk and learn. You don't directly control any one Norn but rather direct their actions as a species. They eat, sleep, play and breed. With your help, they'll do these things faster and better than they would without you. And, by the way, the average life span of a Norn is seven hours.
Since you have the run of the ship, you'll encounter many advanced, small machines that perform a vast array of functions. By learning what they do and piecing them together to make huge automated devices, your Norns will benefit. Here comes the monkey wrench or, more accurately, the Ettin wrench. These unassuming creatures are happy to steal everything that isn't nailed down or guarded, including the machines. They live to build.
Each species lives in a distinctive environment, encapsulated by its own terrarium. Norns inhabit a friendly environment that provides much of what they need to exist. The Ettins live in a desert clime while the Grendels are jungle dwellers. A fourth terrarium is made up of two huge water-filled tanks that contain indigenous water creatures from Albia, both interesting and useful. At opposite ends of the ship is Engineering, the heart of the ship that powers all operations, and the Bridge, your control center. The five unique areas (terrariums and Engineering) are open for exploration and exploitation.
By creating machines and storing the blueprints, you expand your capabilities and areas of control. As your devices evolve, more can be built with ever increasing usefulness. If you're interested in developing your own unique creatures, a special programming language and details can be found at www.creatures.co.uk by joining the Creatures Developer's Program. Creatures 3 is over twice the size of its predecessor and sports an entirely different and more intuitive user interface. An elaborate system of Norn exchange is also available through file transfer (e-mail) and on the Internet. ~ Michael L. House, All Game Guide
