Checkmate is one of three games programmed into the Astrocade console. The object of the game is to surround your three opponents with walls much like Atari's Surround. The game can be played by one to four players. If fewer than four players are available, the computer controls the remaining units.
The game starts with the playing field empty except for the lead unit controlled by each player. Each lead unit continuously moves forward leaving a wall behind it.
When a lead unit runs into a wall, that player is knocked out of the round. All walls left by that player during the round disappear and all surviving players score a point. The round continues until only one player remains at which point the playing field is cleared and a new round starts.
At the start of the game the players can decide how many points are needed to win (up to 99.) If the number of players selected is zero, the computer will play all four positions. ~ Joseph Scoleri III, All Game Guide
