DESCRIPTION
Achtung! In this adventure game you have been taken prisoner by Nazis and are being held deep within their stronghold, Castle Wolfenstein. You must keep your wits about you to find your escape while avoiding the Nazis and their deadlier SS counterparts.
Castle Wolfenstein is a single player, top-down 2D adventure game that utilizes the keyboard, joystick, or paddles for control. You begin the game in a room occupied by Nazi soldiers, and your starting inventory consists of a gun fully loaded with ten bullets. The castle rooms are laid out in a maze-like fashion. The trick is to find your way out of the castle by locating special doors found on each level. In the beginning, sneaking by the guards is a near impossibility, which leaves you with one option: shoot your way out.
When the guard first notices you, he will shout "Achtung!" and begin approaching you. You must act fast, draw your gun and begin firing. Killing him will result in the guard giving out a blood curdling scream and falling in a heap to the ground. If there are other guards in the room, they will have been alerted to your presence and make their way to apprehend you. It is important to clear the room of guards before you begin collecting any inventory from the room.
Inventory can be found in a few places within the castle. After killing a guard, pointing your gun at his body or standing on top of it while pressing the space bar will allow you to collect his inventory. Guards will yield bullets, keys, and grenades; also scattered about the castle's rooms are locked chests. Opening the chests is as simple as pointing your gun at them and pressing the space bar. Some chests can take up to several minutes (as denoted in seconds) to open. To shorten the duration, shooting at the chest will cause the "seconds" to get closer to zero.
Once the timer reaches zero, the chest will open. However, care must be taken not to shoot open chests that contain the bullets or grenades since doing so will result in a game-ending explosion. The chests' goodies consist of items such as ammunition, bulletproof vests, Nazi uniforms, and the war plans, to not so useful items such as Bratwurst and Schnapps.
Donning a bulletproof vest will allow you to be more confident when participating in gun battles. However, be aware the enemy fire can still kill you. When you wear the uniform, you can slip by the guards undetected. But not so fast! Also patrolling the castle rooms are the deadlier SS guards, which can be recognized from their bulletproof vests. The SS guards will spot you even if you're wearing a uniform and will hunt you down from room to room if you try to out run them. Kill the SS guard by playing a game of "catch the grenade." Just don't be too close to him when you throw it! ~ Chris Cavanaugh, All Game Guide
