The year is 2026 and humans have depleted Earth's atmosphere to a point where exposure outside the "Climate Emulation Centers" leads to transformation into a zombie-like creature. This is the reason the "Carmageddon" was created; as a government-sponsored project to eliminate these zombie creatures by placing desperate drivers in a challenge for a one-way ticket to the beautiful off-world colonies. So strap yourself in and prepare for some undead road-kill.
Carmageddon 64 is the first of the Carmageddon series to grace the Nintendo 64. While controversial on other platforms due to its "run over innocent civilians" game objectives, this N64 version involves zombies instead of human targets, thanks to the slight alteration in the storyline
Carmageddon 64 is split into three modes: Carmageddon, Head to Head and Practice. The Carmageddon option features the game's story mode, allowing players to take up the contest of saving the world by finishing first (there are three competitors in each race/battle). Head to Head is the game's two-player mode, delivering battles won by the last car standing, the most zombies slaughtered, or the fastest through the race-based "check point stampede." The Practice mode outlines the game's features and gives players a chance to get a feel for the game.
At first there are only five tracks available but as you progress in both the Carmageddon and Head to Head modes, new tracks are opened up, each based on those featured in Carmageddon 2 on the PC. A total of 20 drivers can also be selected, though only six are available from the onset. Drivers include such characters as Die Anna, Dave Dead and Godrod, to name a few. The methods of scoring in Carmageddon are also interesting, as points are awarded for damage to opponents, eliminating zombies, and passing checkpoints.
Camageddon 64 also presents music and SFX volume controls, three preset controller set-ups, nine heavy Electro/Breakbeat tracks, and controller pak options. The PAL version features borders and is also presented in English. ~ Brad Penniment, All Game Guide
