DESCRIPTION
Breakaway is a less colorful Breakout clone suffering from a lack of rotary controls. Contributing to the awkward control is the fact that it is necessary to hold down a keypad button in order to move the paddle quickly. There's seldom reason to move the paddle slowly, so the quicker of the two speeds should've been the default speed. Still, the game manages to be fun, especially in the highly competitive two-player mode, which introduces elements of Pong. Each player controls a vertically moving paddle while defending a vertical row of bricks. Players bat the ball back and forth until the timer reaches zero (why play can't continue until one player loses all his or her bricks remains a mystery). The game has a number of other options to break up the action, including invisible bricks, double paddles and paddles that chip away (up to five pieces) when hit. ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide
