This EA compilation includes Digital Illusions' original, large-scale multiplayer shooter Battlefield 1942, its two expansion packs, Road to Rome and Secret Weapons of WWII, and its stand-alone follow-up, Battlefield Vietnam.
Single players enter Battlefield 1942 as noncommissioned "grunts," but progress in rank through successful missions to command full platoons of soldiers and eventually fleets of planes and ships. The online multiplayer game is designed to support up to 64 players in the same 3D-rendered battles.
The first expansion pack for the popular World War II shooter focuses on the conflict's Italian and Sicilian campaigns. Battlefield 1942: The Road to Rome adds six new maps, including locations based on the battles for Anzio and Monte Cassino, as well as Operation Husky.
More flyable planes and drivable vehicles, and seven additional weapons are accessible across the eight new campaigns of the second expansion for Battlefield 1942, Secret Weapons of WWII. A new objective-based combat mode forces players to focus on specific goals, while new enemies can include elite British and German commandos.
Battlefield Vietnam follows the same basic battle plans as its winning 2002 predecessor, Battlefield 1942. The follow-up allows as many as 64 players to join and battle together online, across the land, sea, and skies of a virtual Vietnam. Recruits choose to fight for the United States or the North Vietnamese Army as one of five basic soldier types, each appropriate for a different selection of era-authentic weaponry. ~ T.J.
