In Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, an evil mage has locked you in a dungeon cell with a few of your friends nearby. Explosions and sounds of intense fighting can be heard in the distance as some unknown battle rages. With no clue as to where you are, escape is paramount. Obviously, certain factions deem you a threat and you must discover why.

The game, based on the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons gaming system, accommodates both solo and multiplayer action (up to six players via the Internet). Hand-designed backgrounds set the stage for the fantasy world and perspective is through an isometric viewpoint. Though otherwise played in real-time, battles can be paused for issuance of individual party actions through a turn-based system that allows you to plan tactical movements and change weapons.

In traditional role-playing fashion, you must create your characters before the game begins and select or modify their attributes. During gameplay, you gather information through the use of dialogue trees with NPCs and fight when necessary. Eleven new playable NPCs are featured in addition to five from the original game (Imoen, Jaheira, Minsc, Edwin and Viconia). As in the original Baldur's Gate, weapons, armor, spells and a myriad of items are available through purchase, discovery or booty from downed opponents. Character experience caps are set at 2,950,000 points.

The game introduces new monsters including trolls, umber hulks, vampires, werewolves, beholders, rakshasas, golems, shadows, mind flayers and three types of dragons (black, red and silver). The interface is point-and-click with a full complement of customizable hot keys available for in-game action as well, including a full-screen option that hides the interface. Journal, map, inventory, character record, mage spell, priest spell and option screens are similar to the original with the added option to create custom journal entries.

In multiplayer mode, you can chat with other players, import and export your own characters or create new ones to join existing games. Gameplay in multiplayer is the same as single-player mode except the six characters are controlled independently by up to six human participants. ~ Nick Woods, All Game Guide

FYI Anything I add to this thread will be SPOILERS!!!

Now ME3 for the most part was fun. I was a long for the ride all the way up to where you where running to that light to get back onto the Citadel. Then you get screwed up and then the game turns into that slow pace shootout of a MW. Then the conversation with the kid who is the true all mighty in the game and then I'm given 3 things to pick from. I was very disappointed how they ended it.

Now it's a Sci-fi game so I had a feeling it was going to end with society reverting back to some primal thing. Most books in Sci-fi that have humanity meeting....well god or become to powerful usually end up going back to being cavemen.

But what really made me mad was after the credits you have that stargazer and kid talking about "The Shepard" and I was like.....WHAT! NO GOD DAMMIT!!

I was hoping ME would of been different. I was hoping for an epic battle and a epic group hug of the masses.....at least for my Paragon Ending. I took all that time to build up this fleet and to have this epic battle only to boil everything down to 3 choices. I don't even get to fight Harbinger or really take on the more feared Reapers in the game.

Now I won't say it's worse then DA2 because DA2 sucked. That crappy game sucked HARD! The ME Series was fun but I was disappointed that out of a trilogy they end it with such a weak ending. I do find it funny though. ME1 was boring until the last 2 hours and ME3 was AWESOME until the last hour of the game. Poor Bioware needs to find a happy medium.”

Right. Explain to me how the hell they can think that taking a major point of the trilogy, that being the race of Protheans (which are key, KEY elements in both Mass 1 and 2) and basically regulate all that into Day 1 DLC? It's basically to me like they're saying "Protheans? Naw, they're not as important as we made them out to be. They're just MacGuffins. Buy our DLC!!!" ”

“Yeah lots of people jumped on that. Which is crazy! Javik had a massive role in that game. To not have him kills off a ton conversations and of stuff. I don't like the path the game industry is going with DLC. The down fall is most gamers are just to dumb not to buy it. Even I spent $80 on a game that isn't built very well. The game has tons of model glitches and rendering problems. On top of that crappy Deus Ex style ending.”

I was like GOD NO! It's like Final Fantasy 4 all over again. The whole damn game is one enemy. But then after you beat him. The real boss shows up.

Of course in ME3 its a damn child and you get to do nothing with it. You don't get to fight you don't get anything epic. You get a 20 minute speech of crap then have to pick one of the 3 choices but no matter what Shepard dies.

“I don't know who I'd blame for this FUBAR more myself. EA for probably sticking their finger in the pie and no doubt helping BioWare "tweak" a few things so they can monetize it. Or BioWare who went along with this bullshit fail ending to an otherwise stellar trilogy in the first place.

People are saying "Oh those people who want a better ending are just a very loud and local MINORITY."

Funny, I didn't think an 18,000 poll on BioWare's social network against the endings, a Facebook petition that's drawing thousands to it every day (and raising money to send people to PAX), near universal revile to the ending results on just about every forum I've visited, as a fucking "Minority."

This is the first game I've ever seen that has this large a multiple movement against a developer's decision on a video game's end. Ever. ”

“For me, I feel like I was shorted. They could still have The Shepard sacrifice themselves, or live, or take over the reapers, or even have Earth die. Just like the way the game does now. The could even have man and machine merge, even reset the technology by destroying the relays in the universe. Just like the endings do. But I wanted an ending. I wanted at least 1 to 2 full hours of an ending that made me feel good that it ended.

Not the painful 20 min ending that I saw. I've seen 3 endings now and they are disappointing. You figure since I spent almost the full game on disc two that when I had to switch back to disc one to end it. That I was going to get one hell of an ending, but no.

I feel ripped off. I spent 60 to 80 dollars on 3 different games. Over 120 plus hours on those games. Created 6 different characters each with something slightly different. And what was I rewarded with? A lack luster 20 minute ending.

Before ME3 hit some of my friends where talking about the reapers. And they asked "Do you want to know why the reapers are attacking?"

I said "No."

When they asked why this was my response. "No matter what Bioware tells I will not like it. I would rather be left in the dark on why they are attacking then ever give me a reason. It's like believing in God. We now what the Bible says. But what would happen if we ever found out the truth. And it wasn't exactly what we wanted. You would hate it and even blame God. So I would rather not know."

I could of still get an epic ending fighting the reapers and would be left up to guessing why they did it. Which! If you every played Demon's Souls or Dark Souls most of the gamers are left up to guessing about the story. Which makes those games awesome and they don't have an epic journey like Mass Effect.”

Saved the Geth from the Quarians? Don't mean shit, Help kill the Geth with the Quarians? Nope, same endings.

Hell, the ending choices themselves weren't terrible but the execution of it was just terrible. Game was doing so well all the way up until Harbinger lasers you in the face, after that the whole thing just goes screwball.

It's like they made the game then hired some random off the street with very little knowledge of ME and just went "Write endings for us!"

“what grates me more and more now that I think about it, is that the endings completely null and void the reason to play the games full on paragon or renegade. Why? Because you're not locked out of the choices you're ultimately left with, choice A, B, or C.

I could go balls out Paragon and still leave myself open for the whole "Destroy the Reapers" ending. I could go full on Renegade and still go on to the "Control the Reapers" end.

Which to me just makes me ask, why the frick should I even bother to be heroic or anti-heroic throughout the series when the end basically makes it pointless to do so?

For that matter, why even have paragon/renegade interrupts in the game in the first place when it ultimately means absolutely nothing?”

Mostly because the others didn't make sense and were even worse, I mean come on. Control simply means you are no better than TIM and Synthesis is messing with all DNA (which scientifically makes even less sense then the whole Mass Effect thing) without anyones consent.

Sure I have to wipe out the Geth and EDI but that still gets rid of the Reapers and prevents and future cycles dealing with them.

That and I refuse to believe Star Child's illogical BS.

“Well... An "iconic" trilogy that is "the best series this generations of games has to offer" is not going to be played by me due to the fact that they did not go the extra mile and make the whole series accessible to my preferences.

I'm the kind of person that WILL purchase an entire series (even after the first) if new iterations look impressive to me. I bought both Dead Space 1 and 2 after seeing how amazing the second one looked. I bought metal gear 2 even though I had to purchase 1 for my original playstation (way after the fact) to play it... The list goes on, so I won't bore you guys...

In any case, if this game is the "standard" for "best trilogy of this generation" and my friend Gary says "It makes me so sad you're missing out on such an epic series" then why is it that even though the second and third installment are on playstation the first one is on lock down?

This is BIOWARE! This isn't Sony, this isn't Microsoft, this isn't SuckerPunch or Santa Monica studios, this isn't Epic Games, or Nintendo, this isn't a company exclusive to one console and even IF Mass Effect 1 was an exclusive title - I've seen exclusives jump to PS3 after the huge fan lust dissipates; Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, Star Ocean 4, hell even Tales of Vesperia has plans to come on over to Playstation.

I'm willing to give them my money, but I want the whole fucking experience.”

I doubt Microsoft would want to hand over one of their star 360 exclusive's to Sony (even if it would be epic)

Also I should point out the ME2 and 3 games have always had issues with PS3 hardware, hell even the ME1 port had massive coding issues for the PC.

I just think that ME1 was never really designed around being on anything other then the 360 from how it plays on other systems.”

“@Roxas-UrBoxas Just play it as a Duology (If that is even a word) then as ME1 was kinda terrible in some ways with a unwieldy inventory system, the combat was irritating at times, the level up system was far to big and unneeded, the vehicle exploration was weird as hell as well.

The only real benefit from playing ME1 is the exprience of weirdness, more so with ME2 and 3 out as they easily outclass the original (at least for me) in the areas that were irritating.

The choices can be done from a free DLC for PS3 anyway (Which 360 and PC owners had to buy for whatever reason)

Also its hardly an iconic trilogy of this generation, most people I talk to who game don't even know what Mass Effect is. Though it is good enough to warrant playing (renting ot buying is totally up to you).

Don't dismiss a game series out of hand because Microsoft decided it didn't want to give a game to its competition but EA decided to give the last 2 games out of the trilogy to the PS3.”

“@maggiefiasco Oh I know that, but they removed the inventory (thank god, I don't like the whole "This piece of armour has 2 better shield rating! Time to upgrade my armour!)

I prefer the system where you can change your looks and stuff and those armour pieces give you different stats but not finding random ass suits of armour in some random ass house on some random ass planet.

The level up system is now more refined so its not so bleeding long, it even got improved in ME3 so now you pick how your powers evolve down different pathes you can pick.

ME2 even reinserted the vehicle sections as free DLC if you brought the game new, ME3 however lacks any kind of vehicle exploration. (The Mako was never hard to drive really, its was kinda unwieldy though not to mention my character ended up being so powerful that it was quicker and safer to be out of the Mako to kill things)

A used copy is also going to mean you lose out on free DLC and the MP for 3 (Which is actually quite good)”

I once heard Morgan Webb say a game sucked because it was on the Wii, and that was quite literally her only complaint about it. It was a long time ago, and I think it was one of the Super Mario Galaxy titles. I'm not positive about which game because it has been so long.”

I'm trying to get back in touch with the same guy that I talked to in my latest blog post and see if he has anything else to say on what's up with the recent news coming out of BioWare. Which isn't good, starting out, since they posted, then hastily yanked a post stating that they weren't considering any kind of ending rewrite, only to have a senior member of Bio/EA come out and say that, for all intents and purposes, they have no comment other to say that they haven't ruled it out.

I sincerely feel for the poor bastards that have to wade through the crowd that's going to be waiting for them, and rightfully demanding some kind of concrete answers, at PAX East this April 6.

I've always admired him but it is hard to take anything a reviewer says at face value ever.

I find if you can find a few reviewers out there that you respect, then they agree on a game, and the public rates it above average, then it's a safe bet you may like it.”

Anyway, I used to look for his reviews first when I was a subscriber to the magazine. If he rated a game highly, I knew I would probably enjoy it.”

“I have the utmost respect for Bioware and the ME series, and I fully understand that balancing artistic goals vs fan expectations in an ending is an extremely daunting task.

Even so, I'd prefer an amazing game with a lousy ending over 40 hours of lousy gameplay with a killer ending.

That blog post was suprisingly candid, and I found it to be very encouraging. EA's influence in the game is apparent in multiplayer & day-1 DLC, but I believe that Bioware really cares about the franchise and fans.”

What happens with ME3 is that the ending invalidates most, if not all of, the decisions/choices/alignment stances you've taken throughout ME, ME2, and ultimately ME3.

As the end to a TRILOGY of games, it should give you a sense of closure for the current status quo. It doesn't. It leaves way too many threads out there to be what I consider even remotely satisfying on any level.

If they cared, which I hope they still do, I wouldn't have gone into "bunker mode" like they're doing right now. Addressing the matters at hand in a quick and timely manner would've helped. But they haven't. Not yet. I think they will at PAX East, but in the meantime it's just damaging their reputation (and, ultimately their profits) to the point that it looks almost irreparable to the core base that made the ME series as critically acclaimed as it has been up to this point.

Casey Hudson said in an interview that we, the players, are "co-creators" in the series. That our decisions lead to endings that are beyond A, B, C decisions and that they'll get appropriate closure to the storyline.

Now look at the end results, the massive protests, the facebook, twitter, etc etc movements and statements being made that reflect the very fact that the ending to the story flies in the face against what we've been told.

If that wasn't the case, then we wouldn't even be having this discussion as is. ”

I skipped it when it came out and only know that it's using the same Infinity Engine and staged in the same Forgotten Realms setting.

I hope it'll be much like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, but I still have Dragon Age to finish first :(”

“Icewind Dale 2 is my favorite game that was built on the Infinity Engine, while its better than Baldur's Gate I and II, its only flaw is that you prebuild your entire 6 man party and theres no interaction between them. They are personality-less drones you control. However the story and the Areas you explore in IWD I and IWD II are just gorgeous, the music is just perfect. Jeremy Soule did a perfect job on both soundtracks. As much as I liked Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, the whole 2nd edition D&D thing is a serious turn off after learning 3rd and 3.5 D&D. GOD... THAC0... ”
