Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance offers a decidedly console-styled take on Black Isle's AD&D-based Baldur's Gate series. Though the game features the same basic isometric third-person perspective as its acclaimed predecessors on the PC, its fully 3D gameplay is designed to offer a steady flow of "hack and slash" dungeon-crawling action. While a good story is important to any worthwhile role-playing adventure, the players may find themselves more immediately involved with the particulars of their single-player characters in BG: Dark Alliance, as the solitary plotline removes some of the (otherwise welcome) distractions of group interaction and party management. An all-new game engine created specifically for this title makes use of the Xbox's combination of high-end specifications, offering detailed textures and impressive dynamic lighting effects. ~ T.J.
