DESCRIPTION
Although Glu Mobile's 2007 handset edition of Asteroids features graphics many times sharper, smoother, and more colorful than those of its almost 30-years-elder arcade game inspiration, the 2D shooter play of the game is similar. In a science-fictional outer space setting, players take control a ship with only two science-factual movement abilities: turn and thrust. The ship is moving through an asteroid field and players must use the movement controls and momentum to foresee and avoid deadly collisions. The ship can also fire shots that blast the asteroids into smaller pieces (and eventually into harmless dust). A hyperspace ability can get the ship out of a tight spot, but tight spots are everywhere, in the swirling belt of space debris. In addition to the refined graphics and animations, the mobile version of Asteroids adds new modes of play in which players can gain access to powered-up weapons and screen-clearing explosives, and then make good use of such armaments in battles against aliens, black holes, and even bacteria. For the curious or nostalgic, a faithful emulation of Atari's iconic coin-op classic is also included, with the original game's play style and a black-and-white, vector-display, line drawn look. ~ T.J.
