DESCRIPTION

In Second Life, a massively multiplayer online game, players join a virtual society in which residents are free to do as they desire. There are no set goals in Second Life, and as such residents are able to pursue their own interests, be they exploring the virtual world around them, actively seeking out fame and fortune, creating architecture, items, clothing, weaponry and even animals, or simply interacting with others. Avatars are infinitely customizable, allowing players to change appearance, gender, clothes and body style at will. Though residents may act out their every whim, a real-time reputation system allows denizens to rate one another, with financial incentives and improved social status provided to those who garner positive comments.

Utilizing the suite of creation tools provided, players can create buildings or collaborate with others to establish entire cities, erect landmarks or simply carve out a niche for themselves selling products of their own design. Should they desire to, residents can also form a conglomeration, pooling their resources in order to accomplish feats lone players may find difficult, such as building amusement parks. Those with more altruistic pursuits can interact with friends and other residents via instant messaging, basic chat and animated gestures, organize social events, establish a local newspaper, throw parties, or participate in mini-game events such as slot machines and mini-golf.

An event calendar keeps citizens apprised of forthcoming events, while the leaderboards allow the more competitive residents to vie for various honors.
