DESCRIPTION
Guild Wars players go online to take the roles of wizards and warriors in a medieval fantasy world, where they'll battle and adventure on their own, cooperatively, or — as the title suggests — in guild warfare against teams of other players. The game world is home to a once-proud kingdom, which has recently been overrun by the forces of evil and chaos. Available player professions include warriors, rangers, monks, mesmers, elementalists, and necromancers, and players are encouraged to choose a combination of any two professions for each character they play. More options become available in a series of planned "chapter" updates to the main game.
Guild Wars features common world areas, such as towns and outposts, where all players can gather and meet, but the game is particularly mission-based. When players embark on a quest, alone or in a small party, a private area of the game world is created for them, and nearly all of the real adventuring takes place in these exclusive territories. More similar to the multiplayer structure of games like Diablo or Dungeon Siege than conventional "massively multiplayer online role-playing games" (or "MMORPGs"), the developers refer to Guild Wars as a "competitive online role-playing game" (or "CORPG").
With its North American operations led by Ultima Online creator Richard Garriott, South Korean publisher NCSoft has been a principal figure in the realm of persistent world gaming, releasing three games — Linage II, City of Heroes, and Guild Wars — between spring 2004 and spring 2005. Guild Wars uses a different method for ongoing customer payments than most MMORPGs, however. Players log into the game through the developer's "ArenaNet" service, which works similarly to Blizzard's "Battle.net." The Seattle-based ArenaNet development studio was founded by former member of the Blizzard team.
Instead of requiring a monthly subscription fee, the Guild Wars plan is to release regular expansion "chapters," which advance the game world story but can only be accessed by players who pay for them. While Guild Wars players will have to purchase each new chapter they choose to use, they won't be charged any recurring subscription fees to play the basic version of the game for as long as they'd like, and participating in new chapters is always optional. ~ T.J. “Here is yet another MMORPG. It's name? Guild Wars. When I first got GW I started with the third installment Nightfall. At first I was confused. Not at anyone thing either, but everything at once. But what I learned gradually is this game, Unlike most has a somewhat steep learning curve. Which just added to my enjoyment of the game. Now while I know every game out there has a learning curve to some degree I found this one to be on the more gradual scale constantly going up and a half fast rate. With the introduction of heroes in GWNF it was all the greater. But what seems to be the most tasking thing is choosing a secondary class and then creating a good build. Unlike other games like World of Warcraft you do not have access to all your skills and abilities at anyone time. You are stuck with choosing 8 and no more. Along with your over all attributes. You can only completely max out one of them over all after reaching the level cap, thank god you can re do them in towns and outposts. Since I first started playing I have gotten the other two stand alone expansions (Prophecies and Factions) along with the only real expansion the game offers, Eye of the North.
GAME PLAY: 8.5/10
Over all GW offers a nice set up for game play. You can interact with other players through trade chat and general chat in towns and outposts, or anywhere if you are whispering or in a guild/ alliance. Each player gets their own personal maps outside of towns and outposts for questing, or grinding. If you have other players in your party they will also join you in the map, other wise it is just you and NPC's. But not to fret if your a solo kind of guy! in all the GW campaigns you can use henchmen NPC's to form a party and the AI is fairly good for skill use among them and how they interact with monsters. And once you hit EotN or NF you gain hero NPC's. These differ from the henchmen allot. With henchmen you can not change weapons, skills or attribute points. But with a hero you can tailor them to your needs!
As for the PvP aspect of the game once you get your RP character to level 20 (the level cap) you can join in the many PvP variants of the game. Which now include the Codex Arena where you are given a set skill list to choose from to make it harder to get used to. The Zashin where you and a party of 4 go up against an NPC's party of 4 and try and beat their specialization. The random arenas where you are teamed up with a random 3 other players against another team set up the same way. The Hero's accent which s a continuous knockout tournament consisting of battles of teams from all territories which starts in the Heroes' Ascent. Winning matches in the tournament is the only source of fame, which in turn determines a player's rank. The tournament is also the only source of Celestial Sigil drops in the game. As with other PvP areas, defeating opponents and winning maps awards you Balthazar faction. The faction part of the game is used for unlocking stuff for PvP only characters or used to boost your guilds ranking. And finally Guild V Guild play where guilds party up with their best members to face off against other guilds for supremacy over all other guilds!
Each campaign has it's own story line with co-op missions that players must beat to further their progress through that continents map. EotN also expands on each of these campaigns building up for the games squeal Guild WARS 2. Once you finish each story line, you are able to play in "Hard Mode" where you get better drops, but harder enemies, and even harder missions to redo.
As for weapons and armor, you can dye them w/e color you want, and you only pay the big cash for the exotic styles. even though each class has a max armor/ attack value once they hit level 20, they still have to figure out and find the stuff they need to add enchantments to their gear making it hard to perfect you build. I am still amazed on how much customization there is to weapons and armor for those who are hard core PvPers
Also the game has titles/ achievements for nearly everything in the game! To how much of the world you have explored, how many missions you have completed with all the bonus' all the way to how many minutes you've spent stumbling around a city loaded drunk. You can even pick what title to display by your name when people see you in game. To me things such as this add lots of replay value to a game, making you want to redo that final mission again to get "Protector of Cantha" lets you re experience the tough battles once again to hone your skills even more.
As for events, there are minor ones every weekend ranging from drop rate increases on some items to more faction earned in PvP. But on the big holidays like Halloween and Christmas, they go all out revamping each major city and it's NPC's to be more festive. They even have special quest lines that give out unique rewards that have to do with the season.
