DESCRIPTION
1942 for the Game Boy Color brings World War II and mid-eighties Arcade gaming to the palms of your hands. Assume the role of an ace P38 fighter pilot and fly the unfriendly skies in this portable take on the classic vertical-scrolling shooter. You'll soar over land and sea through 32 levels of wartime action as enemy planes, both large and small, enter the arena of combat from all sides of the screen. You should avoid enemies and their fire at all costs and shoot everything in sight. Each time you complete a stage, you will land on an aircraft carrier, only to take off once again for the next level of play.
If you feel the action on the screen is getting too crowded, you can hit button A, which basically acts as a panic button. This initiates a loop-the-loop maneuver in which your plane briefly rises above the danger, executes a loop, then rejoins the fun. These escapes are limited in number, and you receive bonus points for each one you have left at the end of a level, so use them wisely.
When you destroy an entire attack formation, a power-up icon will appear on the screen. Pick this up for bonus points, two extra machine guns, a smart bomb, an ally on each side of your plane, or an extra loop-the-loop. Find each of the six types of power-ups and you'll be crowned Super Ace. From time to time, secret bombers will appear; shoot one of these enemies and you can pick up an icon worth 5,000 points!
Your ultimate goal in 1942, even more important than racking up points, is to reach Tokyo and destroy all remaining enemies. ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide
