I loved that system, and still got it around and functioning, believe it or not."

1996 - I sit down one late winter afternoon after school having just purchased Command and Conquer: Red Alert made by WestWood. I got it when I was about 3-5 (it was so long ago I don't remember), now it wasn't the newest console back then but it wasn't the oldest older (this was around 1994-1996). I only ever owned Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt (until around 1999-2000, when I got a second game but until then I just never bothered due to handheld gaming).
Super Mario Bros. was an incredibly hard game when I was 5-8, nowadays I can beat it incredibly easily but back then I couldn't even beat it once. I thought it was one of the most frustrating games to be made. Now I learnt it wasn't the only NES game made that pisses me off..."

My uncle & I bonded over everything at that time - NES games, music, movies, etc. He was single-handedly responsible for my entire CD collection prior to 1997, actually. But, I digress. During the "tour" of their new home, we were led into the den, where I asked my uncle about the paused game screen on his computer. He asked if I'd heard of this new game, Doom (which I hadn't), & announced that my never having played it was a tragedy. He sat me down, closed his game, started a new one, gave me a quick rundown of the key controls, backed away, turned off all the lights & said, "Have fun!" as he left the room. Needless to say, by the time my mother & I left (hours later), I was both terrified to my very core & completely addicted."

1) Messing around on my dad's 386 and accidentally finding two games that came bundled with it. One was a clone of Snake, the other an extremely primitive version of Scorched Earth, with two gorillas hurling exploding bananas at each other.
2) Getting a TV game as a present. It looked almost exactly like the Atari 2600 but was some really cheap bootleg. Still, it was awesome.
