I hope every one had fun in the beta this weekend. I know I did. I'm feeling a lot better about the game, after playing it.

I was pretty bummed that only a few of us where able to get on our pre-chosen server. I think Anet should allow everyone at least one free transfer, so that the dust can settle and everyone can be with their friends. It would be best if they gave people an option to transfer when they joined a guild, so that a guild could have a home world more easily.

The game itself seemed to have the same issues a lot of MMO's do. but the worst one was overpopulation. It wasn't as bad once you got farther away from the starter areas. I actually found myself quite alone, several times, and in areas that became un-passable for me. At least until I leveled up. I completed the demo story, and found the edge of the world on multiple occasions. Suffered some random network drops, but overall I felt positive. I thin I still like Guild Wars instanced world better. I'll add more to this review as I have time & post it to the GW site & to gDNA as a game review later.

Biggest gripes:

  • No red dots! Wow! did i get ambushed a million times while strolling along looking at the hud trying to find a way point!
  • No auto follow. OK, I fought my way across miles of map. Oh look there's the NPC I need to talk to. Why can't i just click on him/her & run to him/her.
  • Gimmie a break! OK I just fought a mess of centaurs bandit's & other crap & I go to grab my loot. Woot it's an armor Piece I'll be needing in a level or 2! Crap no room... NP I'll just check my inv, and salvage something... and boom re-spawn! Yeah, I just killed him and I'm standing over his corpse, but there he is again beating me over the head with a sword, along with all his buddies that I pulled away to fight 1 at a time! At least wait until loot is cleared before you re-spawn the enemies!
  • Spastic axe dance. So as a Necro, you can use axes, daggers focus items, staffs and scepters. I love the staff for AOE, but pretty quickly found the axe and dagger or  war horn better for 1 on 1 with an enemy, especially after my minions where destroyed. Oh meat shield where for art thou! Yes, boys, warriors are back in a job! Although once I got my DM trait up to 5, I had a random chance to spawn a minion. SO where was I going with this... The default attack with an axe (which, btw, the axe is used as a caster weapon, I don't have to be in melee range) causes Tam to gyrate around like an anime character on crack. I didn't ever try daggers much, but I'm sure the effect would be the same.I equipped a dagger as an off hand towards the end so I could learn the blood skills before switching it to be my main weapon.
  • Only 2 weapon sets. At first I thought that was fine, I would either use a scepter & a my best focus or a staff, since I have no interest in being a melee toon. Worked for a bit, but quickly found I really liked the axe skills and the staff skill. turns out if you have a war horn equipped you get the speed boost skill, if you have a focus, you get some other good skills. Ok I don't need the speed boost. Fighting fighting.... getting my but kicked! Death shroud, ok out of that... damn I need a speed boost to get me the hell outta here.... ok hit H to open hero panel and grab my horn.... yeah, not happening.
  • Death Tax. When you die you can either wait until a player reses you or go to a way point. Either way your armor is damaged. eventually your armor breaks. Either way you have to have it repaired or replaced. This amounts to a death penalty. a charge no matter how small is a charge. Anet specifically said there would be no penalty for dieing.
  • Charge to tele. I like free tele's what can I say....

OK so theres all the negatives. Now some positives

  • Player creation Plenty of flexibility in body styles and faces. enough customization to get the look you want, but not so much that it becomes overwhelming. A few more hairstyles would be nice.
  • Armor I really liked the new armor, at least what I got to see. The cloth looks like cloth. It moves so much more realistically.
  • Dye System You start with the default dye set. The dyes are not consumed so you can play with colors as much as you like. each armor piece has multiple dye-able areas. You can come up with very personal combos. I wish I had screen shotted Tam in the end. I had a very pretty outfit.
  • World It's like Guild Wars on steroids. amazing detail beautiful architecture and landscapes.
  • Guilds there's a lot to like here!
  • Customizable ranks. I can create multiple ranks and assign privileges to them. I can have New Recruits who must stick around to become members. I can have different ranks so that promotions are more meaningful.
  • Guilds earn influence which can be invested by the guild for buffs in PVE or to build (I'm guessing this is for the Guild Hall and Cape). or to set up the guild bank etc...
  • Guild bank! No longer are 2 panes of my personal storage dedicated to items I store to give to guildies!
  • Events You might just be strolling along & be notified of a nearby event, that you can run over and join. I had a lot of adhoc fun and 1 embarrassing moment. I was trying to cross this swamp to continue my personal story line. I was 3 or 4 levels lower than the mosquitoes there and everything kept attacking me. but since I am stubborn I persevered. Eventually the damn things ripped my skirt off (My skirt broke and was unwearable) So here I am laying in the swamp dead in my underwear, when a supply wagon comes through & one of the kind souls guarding it reses me. Since the supply wagon was going the way I wanted to go, and now I had help.... I decided to continue on fighting thru the swamp in my underwear with this gang of strangers!
  • Help this guy or that gal. there was lots of this. some was fun, some was way to repetitive, and kinda boring. I hope that they will add some instanced missions and dungeons to the game. That way you could have task with a little more substance to them. Hopefully designed for multiple players.

All in all I can't wait for the next beta. I hope they leave my toon so I can continue from where I was. But if not there's lots of fun to be had.

I actually loved the game, Granted i did complain about the lack of dots, lack of mouose controls and the spawn times. But overall i think the game dynamics were better than certain other MMO's lately. I ran a ranger thoruhg it all and loved the AoE abilities and whirling defence, awesome skill. I have to say i think Darkhaven and the other two that filled so fast on friday are bad options. I know, i know, easier to recruit when there's lots of players in a server, but i had fun with the people on my server just the same, and seemed to have less lag. Only dced a couple of times. But to each their own.

I just chose Darkhaven, because I liked how the name sounded. I chose based only on the names appeal. Next beta it will be better to choose the lamest sounding server.

It's more important to me that we are all together than that we are on the "popular" server. Id rather play with you guys than anyone else.

I think when the game is released the servers will evolve like they do for other games. I was told in COH, you choose your server based on what you want to do.
There's a RP server, a PVE server a PVP server, a Gay server, A solo server etc. All that will shake out in the long run and when it does, that will be the time to choose a server & base the guild there.

Yeah, there was not enough time for the dust to settle. When I joined Darkhaven that morning, It's population was low.

I'm taking a wild guess here and saying that the limit to the servers is just temporary. Maybe part of stress testing the max capacity.
I'm going to play the hate card and say that it did impress me but overwhelmed me. There was a lot to do but most of it seems bent on making the player(s) complete quests with other people. I even completed one quest just by passing through it on the way to a point of interest. That needs to be fixed, maybe a distance limit.
Unfortunately for me, I don't see myself being able to sink a lot of time into it except for the nights I'm off (2-3 times a week) and even then I usually catch up on sleep.

Agreed on the servers. I don't know if this was a server test, but if I was doing that I would set different limits on each server, starting at lower than what I expected to work and going to higher than expected overload.

Yes it seems massive and overwhelming. But I think that also makes it exciting. I remember that feeling when I first started Guildwars.I had the same thing happen with several event, where I was passing thru, and killed some random creature, and suddenly i was part of the event. I should need to talk to the NPC or something to be included. Maybe notify  me of it.

And of course, work & sleep always get in the way of my fun!
