Time to get serious!

Posted by Angelos1 on 10-Feb-09 02:34pm

Now that we have cleared Naxx and are beginning the harder raid bosses (and getting ready for T9 raiding), I wanted to throw some thoughts out for people about raiding in Unforgiven:

1) We are a top raid guild on our server, and I hope to keep it this way. We started this guild because we wanted to progress far in raiding. If you only want to run farm content you need to find a casual raiding guild. If people continue to not show up for harder raid content you will not be allowed to raid anything for awhile. The guild isn't just here to gear you up, you should be using that gear to help us see more content! It's a mutually beneficial relationship.

2) That said, people need to be in the raid for the fun of raiding. People have been asking to modify loot rules basically to benefit them so they can get more loot even if they are geared (or get loot on alts). I like the officer loot because it does the best job of gearing those who need it and has gotten us far in raiding. If you raid for gear you don't belong in this guild. We are a guild that raids because we like the challenge, enjoy the camaraderie, and like to help each other.

3) There has been some conflict about raids being run earlier than the posted times. I have talked to everyone involved and this won't continue to happen. That said, officers may start a farm-content raid whenever they like as long as it isn't something that was already being planned for later in the week and they are fair about who they take (based on who's online...we can't do anything for you if you're not online).

We are typically doing the raids each week like this:

Tuesday: Angelos (Progression raid)
Wednesday: Angelos (Progression Raid)
Thursday: Staticmagnet (25 man Naxx)
Weekends: Ang or Static (plan for 25 man runs but will do a 10 man or two if low attendance)
Monday: Staticmagnet (Finish whatever we want to focus on)

Since we are a progression guild we will almost ALWAYS run progression as a priority. The farm raids (25 Naxx on down) are extra raids that we can do if we want or if we have other things down. Again, show up for the progression or you won't continue to raid in this guild.

/rant off

Next Up!

Now that we are farming Naxx 25, we will begin pushing into progression on Malygos 10 and 25. The nights I lead we WILL be working on Malygos (Typically Tuesday and Wednesday).

Malygos is challenging from a gear and execution standpoint, and may require us to swap people in and out. Eventually I want everyone to learn the fight and be able to down him, but for now we are trying to get the final progression kills!

Long story short: Don't complain if we swap you out or if you get left out for 10 man Malygos...most people will be left out since we can only take 10.

Raid Points R.I.P.

Posted by Angelos1 on 15-Jan-09 02:14pm

Hey all,

We are finding that the raid points system isn't working as well as intended. The initial point was to have it serve as a mechanism to protect regular raiders who have bad luck with rolls. What it turned out to do was give priority rolls to people that were already well-geared for that particular raid. In addition to it not helping us strengthen the raid group, it is leading to a "barrier of entry" for those not as geared, as they are missing out on substantial upgrades to people who are turning in their raid points.

Officers are going to discuss this more, but I think what we're going to do is go to a straight officer loot system, and Touchit is going to help track who gets drops each week so we can try and distribute loot fairly. We will typically be trying to give the biggest upgrade, but we'll also consider people who have raided a lot with no drops in the decision. We will meet to flesh out the details, like how we'll handle Tier tokens and such.

No loot system will ever be perfect or make everyone happy. I think the officer loot system has been working pretty well, so hopefully this change will be for the better.

If anyone sees this. There is a chance I can't be on to lead the raid tonight. I have a meeting I didn't know about. I may still be there if it gets canceled due to weather, but plan on me not being able to lead it and let everyone know so someone else can take the lead.

<Underling walks into Kel'Thuzad's office and Knocks on the door>

KT: "What now? I am busy!"
Underling: "Sir, we've just gotten word. I guild named Unforgiven has cleared 3 out of 5 wings of Naxxramas."
KT: "Impossible! No one could possibly be that UBER!"
Underling: "There's more sir..."
KT: "What is it?!"
Underling: "We found this note on Thaddius' corpse..."

Kel'Thuzed takes the note and reads:

"Dear Kel'Thuzed,

Sincerely,

Progression Raiding

Posted by Angelos1 on 06-Jan-09 12:52pm

So last night we wiped and wiped and had no loot. Some of you expressed frustration with this, and I want to remind you all that we were very much in progression content. This means that new strategies must be learned, and people have to open their minds a bit. This is part of raiding. From here on out there won't be many loot pinatas.

One thing I want you to consider is, if you are not able to deal with nights like last night, you may want to opt out of consideration for the progression raid team that will be put together when Ulduar comes out. Part of the fun of raiding is figuring out novel strategies and learning to work as a team, but it comes with lots of wipes, expensive repair bills, and no loot. Personally I love the feeling of downing a very hard boss that's wiped us a lot.

All things considered, Trolli and Xues did really well on Rasuvius, and naysayers really don't realize how much was being asked of them. Here are two people who have never tanked in their life suddenly asked to handle a tanking assignment that the best tanks in this guild struggled with for 5-6 shots before they could do it on 10 man.

As for Thaddius, we were simply undergeared. Granted we can do it if we perform perfectly and lose zero dps, but given that low margin for error, even a second of lag could have wiped us. Just think about how easy it will be once we are geared up from another run this week!

Gear Checks and You

Posted by Angelos1 on 05-Jan-09 02:46pm

Trolli posted this in the forum, but I thought I'd put it here so people can see it. This sight is very good. Basically you enter the server and character name, and it let's you see how "raidworthy" they are for the content. It shows gear, gems, enchants, and in some cases it can critique your talents (although most of that isn't developed yet). The big thing you can see is at what level of raiding do most of your upgrades come from, and what level of raiding can you be competitive in.

While this isn't a perfect measure of how good of a raider one is (skill and other factors are of course important), it does let you compare your toon to others to see roughly where you stand. And also reminds you to gem and chant your gear if you're being a noob!
