Misty of Hoenn Pokemon School's Teirs and Play Rules
Posted by KatrinaTheLamia on 13-Jan-10 02:11pm
Yeah--figured I would note a rather stunning turn of development, and have decided not to adopt Smogon University's Rulesets. Normally I would be inclined to make use of their gentleman's system... but well--the idea with Misty of Hoenn Pokemon School is to try to adopt our own system, and structure for said system.
I will, in the meantime, try to set up some manner of Pokemon battling sim that we can use--however, Shoddy Battle is pretty horrible. It makes it worse in that I have issues setting it up on a headless server.. as the server program requires using a GUI to set up (my reply when I first saw that was, and I quote, "WTF?! I Hope there is a curses or shell mode to set this up"--still have not found such a thing).
Pokemon Net Battler also has a few issues involved on the matter. Mostly in that it is based on an old language without much support--VB6.
From what I hear, somebody at Smogon is working on a third option--but movement is horribly slow on the matter. I also am working on an fourth option that I am calling P*DA ZX, in much the same fashion of the first major simulator, Pokemon Net Battler (the Starforce series was not really out yet, when I first came up with the name--and back then it was Poke ZX... P*DA ZX came about after I decided to base it on a piece of equipment from the Gamecube games).
As per our rules, I would like to suggest that we try to get some teams together on our games (seeing as how we seem to lack a decent option for a simulator), and try to figure out what works as far as a ruleset will go.
My suggestion on the matter, and I would love to hear the opinions of our wonderful grunts and the other Holder of the Whooping Stick, on this setup.
The Misty Licensing System
This system is simple--in order to use what is normally considered a game breaking strategy, you need to pas a set of licensed tests.
Luck Object License
As we are all aware, Luck Objects are defined as objects that activate at random at the beginning of a turn. These effects can often change the flow of the battle. The current list is:
- Focus Band
- King's Rock
- Bright Powder
- Quick Claw
Now--many people generally will whine that the luck element that these elements bring, give an unfair advantage. Which is pretty much akin to saying "playing a slot machine gives you an unfair advantage in life"--or "having the ability to get Shinies in Pokemon, will cause you to be able to capture all shinies".. or some such thing. These items are still prone to failure, just as much as they are prone to success.
The test goes as: in a trial of five battles. Win all five of them in a row, with both applicants using Luck Objects. The idea being that this Luck Object License event will only occur something silly like, once a year.
Myrmadon License
This license deals with evasion increasing moves/abilities. Since we are using a licensing system here, we can handle to add elements into this license as well as add some overlap.
Myrmaddon License allows the use of:
- Double Team
- Minimise
- Snow Cloak
- Sand Veil
- Bright Powder
Again--the test will happen once a year, once things are setup, and will consist of requiring a trainer to win five matches in a row in which these items are abused by both parties.
Specialist License
The Specialist License is a license that allows the use of multiple Pokemon of the same species. On your team. Such as two clefable, two gardevior, or six land sharks. This follows the same annual tournament style system as the other two. Except, this one has an additional requirement: the Type License. Also, the Type License only applies to one specific Pokemon type to be applying for (Normal, Fire, Grass, Water, Electric, Fighting, Psychic, Ghost, Rock, Ground, Ice, Dark, Dragon, Bug, Poison, Flying, and Steel)--and the Specialist License requires that it be that type. Should the type trying to Specialise in be of two types, the person will need Type Licenses of both those types.
Type License
This license allows the user to be able to make the claim of being able to specialise in a specific Pokemon Type. Similar to a Gym type tournament. Each person chooses a type, and then battles everybody else in the tournament in a round robin type system. The people who place in +3 grade get the license. The grades being -3, -2, -1, +1, +2, +3--yeah, that is right, a Bell Curve.
Item Duplication License
This license allows for the user to have a license appear on more than one of their pokemon. This system allows for two or more Pokemon with Life Orbs or Left Overs.
Done in the five in a row battle gauntlet.
Law of Conservation of Awesomeness
Personally I would like to add a question on the idea of Pokemon, that generally exist in a one Pokemon of a kind type fashion, being on teams. These would be:
- Lugia
- Hooh
- Zapdos
- Moltres
- Articuno
- Mewtwo
- Suicine
- Entai
- Raikou
- Groudon
- Krygore
- Rayquaza
- Cresselia
- Giratina
- Mespirit
- Uxie
- Azelf
- Shaymin
- Heatran
The main issue is that these Pokemon only can concievably exist at one place at a time. Other legendary Pokemon, such as Celebi, Dialga, Palkia, and Darkrai would have ways around it. As Celebi and Dialga could both pull a temporal paradox to be in the fight. Palkia is more than capable to rend the fabric of space to allow two of him. Darkrai is a legendary based on nightmares, nuff said.
Other legendaries it is harder to really think of them as a one spot only thing. Mew apparently is an old species of cat like Pokemon (akin to Repicanth). Lati@s, in various Media, have been shown as being able to breed. Jirachi falls into the same category as Mew (or possibly Celebi). Deoxys is a mass of DNA bundled together--he is more than likely to be able to have more of him. Rotom is capable of breeding (and well, is an event pokemon, not a legendary--there is a difference.. calling Rotom a legendary simply because you can only get him in one spot in his debue game, would make Eevee a Legendary).
Then we get into the Regis, Regirock, Regice, Registeel and Regigas. I generally regard these, based on their flavour text, and media I have seen them in so far, as being genetically engineered Pokemon by a civilisation long ago. I generally think of these as a very literal Pokemon version of a tank.
Arceus, I generally regard as the Zubat of the gods. Yes, that is right, I said it, amongst the gods, Arceus is their equivilent of a Zubat. Just my thoughts on a possible future addition that will be added into the series when we get to the Gen 5 games.
What? We went from Mew and Mewtwo to having Lugia, Hooh and Celebi to having Rayquaza, Groudon, Krygore, Deoxys and Jirachi to having gen 4 with Palkia, Dialga, Giratina, Cresslia, Darkrai, Heatran, Shaymin and Arceus. Comparing Arceus, Palkia, Dialga and Giratina to Mew and Mewtwo (Mewtwo being, allegedly the ultimate Pokemon--only to be beaten by the whiny emo Lucario, who is just slightly better than the scene kid Zangoose)--I am certain that once we get to Gen 7, my prediction of Arceus being the god's Zubat will be better known XD
Summary
Any questions on this system? I was thinking that all the licenses would be able to be done at one time, with each person being required to only be able to try for a single license. Without the license, use of the game breaking items will not really be allowed.

working on getting this guild moving
Posted by KatrinaTheLamia on 08-Jan-10 10:20pm
Yeah yeah yeah--a Pokemon Guild that supposedly died a horrible death being revived.
Well, I have been wanting to do more work on this, and after a good conversation with Deana on various nontypical Pokemon Strategies (in this case, they consisted of more than beating something with a nail filled baseball bat until it stopped moving) I kind of decided i t was time this was revived. =D
