Mesh Coming to Second Life This Summer
Submitted by Svoboda 1156 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 1156 days ago
Of all of the things that excite us about Second Life, and there are many, Mesh is near the top of our list. Since the Mesh Project Viewer has been available, many content creators have given it a try on the test grid and we have only seen a small glimpse of the unlimited creative potential that this technology brings to Second Life. On behalf of everyone at the Lab, we want to thank everyone who have participated in the test and created these cool videos demonstrating the power of Mesh. So, now that you are excited about trying it out on the Main Grid, we wanted to share the launch time line, as promised. In July, we will enable a limited set of regions to use Mesh and will roll it out, in a phased approach, throughout August. By the end of August, everyone in Second Life will be able to import Mesh objects. Of course, if we run into unforeseen issues or bugs, then this time line will need to shift. We know that you must have a lot of questions regarding policies, costs, and how Mesh objects will be weighted. Although we cannot share these details yet, we will continue to keep you informed on our progress and other relevant news on this blog. So buckle up and get ready for a whole new wave of creativity in SL.

Sony executive to testify before Congress about PSN attack
Submitted by LordXenophon 1159 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 1159 days ago
At the beginning of the month, a US Congressional subcommittee looking into the PlayStation Network outage and data leak asked Sony Computer Entertainment America chairman and Sony Corp. executive vice president Kaz Hirai to testify. The hope was his testimony would answer questions about the three-week PSN downtime and the data breach which compromised 77 million users' personal information. Tokyo-based Hirai didn't make the trip to Washington, but did provide a detailed list of answers to the subcomittee's questions. Now, the Atlantic reports that Sony will indeed send a high-level executive to testify before the US House of Representatives' Committee on Energy and Commerce's Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade. Ken Johnson, an aide to subcommittee chairwoman Mary Bono Mack (R-CA), told the magazine that Tim Schaff, president of Sony Network Entertainment, would testify before the subcommittee next week.

SimCity is a series beloved by millions, and one that's sadly been neglected of late while the Sims franchise went supernova. Now, according to MCV, it's coming back. Only, you may not like what comes next. It seems that EA is bringing SimCity back as a Facebook game, hoping to steal a share of the casual market away from the likes of Zynga's CityVille and FarmVille.

The PSN was hacked. Then Sony Online Entertainment. Then Sony Thailand's site, Sony's internet provider So-Net, Sony Music Indonesia, Sony Music Greece, Sony Ericsson's Eshop and Sony BMG Japan. But Sony's banking and insurance arms? They're not worried. According to Sony Financial Holdings, their systems are different from the ones that were hacked. A spokesperson told Asahi, "We are not affected (by the attacks) because we manage our networks with highly safe systems developed specifically for financial services."

Battlefield 3 to Carry a Boatload of Foul Language
Submitted by LordXenophon 1160 days ago on Off Topic
tagged as hot 1160 days ago
Electronic Arts has had a strong hand in the first-person shooter market for the past decade with its Battlefield series. Part of its excellence has come from the war-replicating audio that has brought the war experience to life. Itís only natural that this quality carries over to the upcoming title, Battlefield 3. Tomas Danko, the voice over producer over at DICE, has given us some insight into the audio coming in Battlefield 3 via his Twitter account. In terms of sheer density, Tomas had the following shocker to share, "No FPS ever had this large amount of VO variations for Multi Play, not even close. Over 300 for the, Man down' event alone." But what about content? Tomas commented, "BF3 has more explicit words than BC2 Iím afraid. SP and MP." So basically lots of audio and cursing, just what the doctor ordered. Foul language can be fitting at times, but hopefully it takes notes from Killzone 2, where it was abused.
