Study Finds Some Youths 'Addicted' to Video Games
Submitted by absolutlush 1492 days ago on Gaming
tagged as hot 1492 days ago
A Washington Post article that reviews a recent study released that found that 8.5% of American Youths between the ages of 8 and 18 are sho behavioral addiction to video games. It seems the study used the criteria for gambling addiction to determine if the child was addicted. Many of the statistics seem very skewed and/or questionable. A good read in general as the writer of the article tries to take a middle of the road approach instead of just quoting the study.

Student Arrested For Making CS Map Of His School
Submitted by Jodou 2210 days ago on Counterstrike
tagged as hot 2210 days ago
"A Chinese student was removed from Clements High School in Fort Bend, Texas after parents complained he had re-created the school grounds in a game and uploaded the map for his friends to play. The boy was placed in the district's alternate education school and later arrested, as the police considered him a "terroristic threat". The Chinese community and the boy's mother have rallied behind him, saying the school has acted too harshly in the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings. No charges were filed, though the boy won't be allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies." Photos of the CS map can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8082096@N02/

Blizzard Sues Gold Seller
Submitted by Grimparrot 2187 days ago on World of Warcraft

Way to go Blizzard! If developers would start suing these companies, we might see less secondary market activities in game and such things would be relegated back to the slimy underbelly of the internet where they belong.

Gold Selling and RMT illegal in Korea
Submitted by Tarinth 2200 days ago on Gaming
tagged as hot 2200 days ago
South Korea has passed a new law called the Advancement of Game Industry Act. It goes into effect on Monday, and makes it illegal to sell gold or game items, operate bots for the purpose of farming, or hack games. Penalties are harsh: violation can land you in prison for up to five years, along with a hefty fine. You can read the English translation of the new law on the link... RMT/gold-selling in Korea will now be the domain of organized crime; how is this going to impact the world of gaming?

Pandora Listens and She Knows What You Want to Hear
Submitted by Roxianna 2121 days ago on Entertainment
tagged as hot 2118 days ago
Pandora seems to understand what I like in music and play me track after track of things I've never heard before, but are now my new favorites! Tell Pandora, part of the seven year old Music Genome Project, one song you like, she starts finding other music by musical identity of a song - everything from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and of course the rich world of singing and vocal harmony. It's not about what a band looks like, or what genre they supposedly belong to, or about who buys their records - it's about what each individual song sounds like. You can start listening to music without even registering and you get to listen about 24 hours before they ask you register. After you can just keep on listening and enjoying new and familiar music with the sounds you like.

Submitted by Hades-LotD 2105 days ago on Gaming
tagged as hot 2105 days ago
While the stereotype of the pathetic, lonely gamer sitting in his basement persists among some members of the media, there are some who have begun to recognize the social importance of gaming. With the advent of online gaming, and especially massively multiplayer titles, the social aspects of gaming are more important now than ever. New research from Nottingham Trent University shows what many gamers already know: gamers are actually quite social individuals. The new study found that many individuals playing MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft become good friends with almost half meeting in real life. More within...

Richard Duffek leaves EA Mythic
Submitted by Bishop 2077 days ago on Warhammer: Age of Reckoning
tagged as hot 2077 days ago
In a surprising turn of events, Warhammer Online community manager Richard Duffek (known on GuildCafe as Richard_EAMythic) has "parted ways" with EA Mythic. No further information as to why the sudden split appears to be available at this time, and likely never will be, considering that no details of Sanya's leaving earlier this year were ever made public.

Gaming Improves Job Skills....Continued
Submitted by Hades-LotD 2038 days ago on Gaming
tagged as hot 2038 days ago
Convinced that games can help them thrive some companies have turned work groups into guilds, rewarded staff with experience points when they complete tasks, giving out titles and badges when a guild finished a project and portraying objectives as quests. Virtual worlds could become key to future business life Some were also considering using a virtual currency as a reward system allowing workers to cash in their savings for benefits or extras for their office space. The top performing guilds also get to do the best projects.
